Ali MacGraw oil painting
WIP
I hate to jump around, and confuse anyone, but I created this painting of actress Ali MacGraw before I decided to separate this new series into decades. At the time, I thought I was just going to paint any actress or model who interested me. This will go into the 1970s group. I hope to paint in a sequence from now on, going back to the 1920s. However, I never know when the muse will strike. Sometimes I’ll run across a photo while doing the research, and I just have to paint it there on the spot.
I sketched this one quickly with a chunky brownish pastel.
I was using this photo for reference,
along with some others.

Quotes from the 1970’s movie Love Story:
Jennifer Cavalieri was played by Ali Macgraw
Oliver was played by Ryan O’Neil
Jennifer Cavalieri:
You’re gonna flunk out if you don’t study.
Oliver Barrett IV:
I am studying.
Jennifer Cavalieri:
Bullshit. You’re looking at my legs.
Oliver Barrett IV:
You know, Jenny, you’re not that great looking.
Jennifer Cavalieri:
I know. But can I help it if you think so?
***
Jennifer Cavalieri:
You look stupid and rich.
Oliver Barrett IV:
Well, what if I’m smart and poor?
Jennifer Cavalieri:
*I’m* smart and poor.
Oliver Barrett IV:
Well what makes you so smart?
Jennifer Cavalieri:
I wouldn’t go out for coffee with you that’s what.
Oliver Barrett IV:
Well what if I wasn’t even gonna ask you to go out for coffee with me?
Jennifer Cavalieri:
Well that’s what makes you stupid.

I’m kicking myself for not prepping the canvas panel with modeling or molding paste before I started painting. I think I was overly eager to start this one because I never noticed it wasn’t prepped. I don’t enjoy painting directly on canvas panels or stretched canvas.
You can read and see how I prep my canvas boards in this post. I still do it the same way, and wish I had on this one, but it’s too late now. Ugh..I really dislike how the canvas shows through the paint, especially in this shot..
Again, I choose a cad red background, and painted with oils – a theme within a theme, perhaps? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, these are the oil portraits I recently painted of Anna May Wong, and Marilyn Monroe. So far I think choosing cad red was a good decision…really makes the paintings pop. Like the others, this one is still a work in progress. I’ll let you know when I have more photos to share.
Watching: How a sketchbook can change your life – I look at my art journals as diaries, also. I’ve got stacks of them that I’ve created over the past 20 years.
Fun with Lizette and Jose in the Art Studio – Such a fun discussion. I adore these two!
