I’ve been creating up a storm this month in my new art journal. This is only half of what I’ve painted so far. I’m breaking it up into two blog posts.
All these portraits were painted with a mixture of chalk paint, craft paint, watercolors, and gouache. There’s probably some acrylic in there, also.
I wish you could feel the texture of these pages. It doesn’t show up well in the photos, but these pages are crinkled & wrinkled. I use a lot of water when I paint, and this is a cheap $4 kid’s book, made for crayons, not paint. The paper is almost as thin as notebook paper, which as you know, I also love using for my art journals.
Right now, I’m only painting on one side of the paper. I’m looking forward to turning the book over, and painting on the other side of each of these paintings because the paper will crinkle even more.
For now, tho, I’m giving each page plenty of time to dry because I don’t want to distress the paper so much that it tears off the binding or starts falling apart. It’s easy to poke holes in thin wet paper.
I’ve never quite understood why some artists get upset when their paper warps. To me, it’s a beautiful thing when art & science meet, shake hands and do a do-si-do on the dance floor.
I know I’ve already posted a couple of these, but I wanted to take the photos in chronological order of how it looks when I flip through my art journal.
I will share more when I can. My online vintage store is busy right now, so I’m not sure when I’ll have time to post again, but hopefully soon.
I hope you have a lovely creative day.
