In the space between chaos and shape there was another chance.

This painting almost ended up biting the dust. I was thisclose to grabbing my jar of black paint, and painting over the entire thing. It started out looking like this..
And I absolutely hate it. It was too dark, too blue, too yellow, too.. yawn, b o r i n g. The only thing I liked about it was the collage paper you see poking through at the bottom, and the glass. I knew I had to change it because I didn’t want it going out the door looking like a hot mess.
I used to be into dark colors, and I still am..for my portrait paintings. When I started painting florals again three years ago, I didn’t think to change my palette, so a few paintings were painted with darker colors. Colors I’d never reach for when painting a floral today.
Getting the painting from there to here was a bit of a challenge. The first thing I did was sand it down, and then I started covering up those hideous dark blue flowers, and yellow background. I’m so in love with the background now with the swirly light blue, pink and white. Such an improvement! I knew I wanted to keep some of the collage paper showing through at the bottom, so I did.
Every time I revise a painting, it reminds of something I learned while taking an online class from Misty Mawn a few years back. She said something like, “Paint until you love it. If you don’t love it, keep going until you do.” This painting is now finished.

You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect – you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break—her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.

So, here’s a semi humorous story for you. My Instagram was hacked a couple days ago. It’s completely my fault for using an untrustworthy app to schedule my Instagram posts. I thought it would save me some time, but turns out the connection wasn’t secure. It was stupid of me, I know.
I noticed something was off when suddenly my Instagram feed was full of people I didn’t recognize. I clicked on my profile, and noticed I was following 600 or 700 more people than I normally do. So, I changed my password, and started the long process of clicking and unfollowing all those accounts.
Guess what happened? While I was trying to get my account back to where it should be, I got blocked for “suspicious activity”. Oh, the irony in that. Why didn’t you block the hacker, Instagram, before they were allowed to follow so many people?? It would have saved me a bunch of aggravation and time. ! Live and learn. Be careful of the apps you trust.

So, I watched him do it, and I still don’t know how he does it.

What a difference a camera makes
The Swimmer
shot with iPhone
I was being lazy when I went to shoot this photo. Instead of going through the whole grind that I usually go through with setting up my dslr camera on my tripod, I just shot some quick pics with my iPhone instead. I figured it’d be good enough for Etsy, but it turns out I was wrong. I uploaded the photo above to my computer, and thought..wow, what happened? The photo looked nothing like the painting once I saw it on a bigger screen.
Now, I love my iPhone, like..really LOVE it, and this is in no way bashing the job it does. I think it takes great photos, especially compared to the horrible Android I used to have, but here’s why I don’t think it’s good enough. The photo below was shot with my Nikon D3200. The lighting was the exact same for each of these shots, and the photos were taken just minutes apart.
The Swimmer

My eye tells me that the painting looks more like this photo than the one above.
Now, if you use your phone for all your photos, I’m not telling you to run out and buy a Nikon (I’m actually thinking of switching back to Canon soon, but that’s a whole ‘nother blog post). I still plan on using my phone to take work in progress shots because it’s quick, and easy. For final product shots, I’m going to stick with my dslr, even if it is more work to set up the tripod.
