Woman with pink rose in her hair
I have a large, growing collection of quotes. Every one I see that resonates with me, I copy and paste it into a text file, and save it. Whenever I need a quote for my blog post, I have a slew of them on hand. I see a lot of quotes online every day, on FB, Twitter, everywhere, but surprisingly, I only have two all time favorites.
I do this not for you. I do it so I can shut up the gnawing, dimwitted critics in my brain who tell me I am nothing.
Natalie Goldberg
I love Natalie Goldberg. I’ve carried Writing Down The Bones around with me since it was published in 1986. I’ve read both of her memoirs, and all her books, except a couple, I just noticed. Ack! I must get them! She speaks my kind of language, and her words flow so smoothly, it’s almost like she’s in the room speaking directly to me. It’s not surprising to me that one of her quotes is my favorite.

My second favorite quote is by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, a gay visual artist, who sadly, passed away from AIDS in 1996, when he was only 38 years old. I did a Goggle search, so you can see his art here.
I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that’s why I made works of art.

What are some of your favorites? You never know, I may find a new favorite upon yours.

Impasto oil painting
girl and bird
Created in June 2014. Revised in July 2014 because there was something about this painting that was bugging me. So, I went back in and changed some colors – made snow in the background, and got rid of the gray, lightened the bird because he was too dark, changed the color of her dress, and generally made the layers even thicker overall. Now, I not only like it, I LOVE it.

Oil portrait painting on canvas
I’m kinda obsessed with painting girls looking over their shoulders. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve done quite a few like this. This one took a while because of all the layering in her face, and trying to get the skin tone just so. I thought her shirt might be reflecting onto her face, somewhat, and I had to give height to her cheekbone.
