Yesterday I was writing about blocking out some time in my day for painting because if I don’t make time, I end up sitting at my desk all day. Having an online presence is vital to my job, but so is getting into the studio and painting. I’d love to spend every day just painting, and have someone take over all the online work for me, but that’s not going to happen anytime soon. So, I thought  a lot about it, and decided that 4pm – 8pm are going to be my studio hours. That means no answering emails or Internet during those hours.

Being an artist, and working for yourself, is no different that any other job. You have to show up, and work. I honestly don’t know how I’ve been accomplishing anything lately. I paint for ten minutes, then I’m back doing computer work. Four hours later, I remember I was painting something, and I paint for 20 minutes. Back to the computer. I need to rein myself in, and focus for longer periods of time. It feels great knowing that later today I’ll be painting for 4 whole hours, nonstop. Yes!!

I’m sitting here with my pen and notebook, trying to nail down a painting schedule that will work for me. I need one..nothing crazy or rigid, but I need to block out some time every day for painting. Right now, I’m doing about 95% internet stuff.Etsy listings, FB, FB page, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Flickr, some Ning sites, my new website (which isn’t completed yet), and my blog here. I also spend a great deal of time with my camera, and in Photoshop making these photos you see here and in my listings. It takes a huge chunk out of my day. It gets to be 2am, and I still haven’t painted yet that day. I need to block out some painting time or I’ll never find time to paint again.
 
 
One thing that’s been throwing me off lately is my husband’s hours keep changing. One week he works nights, the next week he works early day shift, then nights, then days. This has been going on for a month now. We just get used to going to bed reallllly late, like 4am, for me, and bam. Gotta get up at 6am again. I’m working a million hours a day on no sleep, and I’m not functioning the best. So, I decided he’s on his own. I can create at any time of day, I don’t need to find my muse or be inspired or be in the mood. I just get to work, but my prefered hours are nights. I love the dark, and quiet best. So, I’m back on my night shift, and loving it. I just have to paint more, and spend less time online. Wish me luck! haha
 
 
What’s your painting schedule like? Have you set daily studio time for yourself? Or are you flying by the seat of your pants? Having an open schedule is fine, but when everything else starts crowding out my painting time, I know it’s time to rein myself in.

I’m continuing on with my Photo booth Series that I started last month. I don’t know if I’ll ever grow tired of this series. I have always loved old black and white photographs, so this series is right up my alley. I love the hairstyles, and being able to use my creative license, and add color where there wasn’t any in the photo.
 
 
I found out an easy way to have reference photos delivered to my inbox every day. I went to Ebay, and did a search for vintage photo booth photos, and saved the search. Now, every day I get email with numerous photos in it. I sit at my desk with a photo open on the screen in front of me, and I very loosely draw the person. I usually exaggerate the hair or some facial feature..in other words, I make the painting my own, and I don’t copy the photo exactly. If I like the photo, I bid on it. 🙂 I have a huge collection of photos that I’ve bought on Ebay, and it grows by the month. It’s kinda an obsession with me, just a wee bit one.

About: I asked my FB friends what they thought I should title this painting. I got so many responses, and it was hard to choose. I liked the idea that the three high school girls are standing at their locker, and they’re trying hard not to look at a cute boy they see down the hall. I think this is exactly how girls act when they see a boy they like. It’s easier to pretend not to see, and act coy.
 
 
Type: mixed media acrylic painting on wrapped canvas. The sides are 3/4 inches. Staples on back. All sides are painted black.
 
 
Sealed several times to protect it from dirt and dust. It has a slight glossy shine, and a gritty feel when you run your hand across it. If it gets dusty, all you have to do is wipe with a dry cloth. It is signed and titled on the back.

I really wish you could see this painting in person. I don’t think I captured it well with my camera lens. There’s so much layering, and things you can see with your eyes better than my camera picked up. The camera flattened everything.

It was snowing earlier today, and I was sooo excited. Now, it’s pouring rain, which is great, too. I love a good stormy day, doesn’t matter if it’s rain or snow. Sunny days are so boring to me. I know..I’m weird, but I’ve been this way since I was little. I get excited every time the weather turns dark..(not tornado dark, of course. That’s too scary) I loved wearing my raincoat and boots. Still do!!

She’s on her way to her new home in Maine. 🙂 Some paintings are hard to let go, knowing I’ll never see them again. This is one of them. I painted her after my cat Emma died on Mother’s Day. This painting will always remind me of Emma. At least I’ll always have the photo, tho, right?

We’re finally starting to have autumn like weather here this week. The high is only going to be in the 60s and low 70s, and that makes my little heart go pitter patter. YES!! My favorite kind of weather. That will make the pollen go down, and maybe, just maybe, for the first time in many many months, I’ll start to get some relief from outdoor allergies. I might be able to breathe through my nose again, stop having migraines, put the neti pot, and nose sprays away for a couple months. A girl can hope.
 
I can’t believe a branch of leaves on the tree outside my studio window have turned bright yellow. Usually leaves around here just turn brown, die, and fall off the trees during a good wind storm (which we’re about to have today..storms are coming). ‘Tis disheartening, coming from the northeast as I do, where the fall foliage is spectacular with all the bold colors. I’ll take a bright yellow branch of leaves, thanks!

I take my coffee black, so I haven’t tried this, but did you know you can make your own pumpkin spice lattes at home? I know so many people who go running to Star Bucks at the first sign of fall to get pumpkin coffee. I mean lattes, of course. lol I can only guess it’s so much cheaper to make your own. I might have to try this, minus the almond milk because I’m allergic to almonds..but, it might be tasty, no? I have no idea, really. Never had one, but since the weather is changing, I’m starting to crave fall food.
 
 
I’m up early this morning. Had another horrible nightmare, woke up at 4am, and now it’s 6am, and I can’t/won’t go back to sleep. It’s gonna be a looooong day. Sweet Pea is also up, and racing and running around. omg..she is out of control this morning. She ran into the wall so hard (she’s blind..born without eyes, in case you didn’t know), I could hear her head making contact from the next room. Bam! Ow! Don’t worry, she’s okay, and it didn’t slow her down any. lol She’s a crazy fast kitty today.

I’ve been working on a gimongous canvas this week, and it’s kicking my butt. I’m not making any progress. It seems like all I’m doing is wasting a lot of paint because I can’t figure out what I’m doing. Gah. I’m going around in circles. I hate when I can’t wrap my head around a painting. I think it’s time to go back to small paintings for a while. I need to think about it.

Since I’m waiting for video to upload to my youtube channel to complete this blog post, I might as well throw down some links. These are other places you can find me online. I’m on Facebook nearly every day. I have a love/hate relationship with the site, just like everyone else. I think of quitting every single day. But, I don’t. I don’t know what’s wrong with my head. Nobody really talks to me there, and I wonder every time I post why I bother, but I do.
 
I just started using Twitter again. I have no idea why. I don’t get Twitter. I have A LOT to say, and I can’t do it in 140 characters. People follow me, tho. You can, too.

What else? Oh, Pinterest. I have to tell you, I’m very choosy about the boards I follow on Pinterest. I want to look at art, and that’s about it. Pinterest seems to be about FOOD and more FOOD, and well..I’m on a very extreme, limited diet. I have sooooo many food allergies, and Celiac Disease, which means no wheat or white flour, no rye or barley, no maltodextrin, dextrin, no gluten free food because gluten free doesn’t really mean no gluten. Gluten free means it meets the FDA regulations, but it can have a percentage of gluten in it. Gluten free also doesn’t mean wheat free. I had to learn this the hard way. I can’t even have a trace of wheat or gluten. I get violently sick. There’s also a HUGE list of other stuff I’m allergic to, and I don’t eat meat/chicken/fish/seafood of any kind..it grosses me out.
 
Soooo, needless to say, I don’t want to look at food on Pinterest. lol I’ve come to terms with being on a crazy restrictive diet for the rest of my life, but I don’t want to have delicious food in my face every day..especially sweets. I have a huge sweet tooth..or, used to, anyway. If you have any other interests besides food, I’ll take a look, and follow whichever boards that strike my fancy.Okay, the video has uploaded. Yay! Watch me paint this painting..
