Not sure if the title is going to stick. Depends on how much her expression changes (or not) as I keep painting.

Day 42
first layer
It’s been hard for me to get into the studio lately. It’s labor day weekend here in the USA, and most everyone is on a break from work. Not only did we have some plans, but my husband just got back from a 2.5 week trip. I’m a bit clingy right now, and don’t want him to leave my sight. Had to drag myself into the studio this afternoon, booing and hooing all the way. haaha! 😀 Needless to say, it was a short work day, and this portrait is far from finished.
Sometimes it’s more important to watch the sun setting on the ducks in the lake, rather than spend every waking minute in the studio. Y’know what I mean?

There are only two styles of portrait painting; the serious and the smirk.

Layer two is finished, and as I’m sitting here looking at the photo of this painting, I like it, as is. However, there are a few small things I’d like to change (uh oh!). 1. his nose..I thought I fixed it already, but there is still a deep line on the left side that needs my attention. Also, it could use some straightening 2. his nostrils need more work: there is too much light were there shouldn’t be 3. the ear on the right needs a bit more definition. 4. his hair
It’s very possible these things are going to bug me, and come tomorrow, the painting will go back in the studio for a third layer. Sigh.

This is the first layer of oils. Yup, I’m doing it again..not posting a finished painting. It’s just not possible to paint these oil portraits in one sitting. I already knew that, but thought maaaybe I could pull it off. Nope.
Here’s why..I work with different oil mediums to thin the oil paint because it’s too thick for me to use out of the tube. In case you don’t know, the mediums can also be used to slow down or speed up your drying time, depending on what your needs are.
Because the fat over lean rule when painting with oils, my first layer is quite thin, and a bit slippery feeling from the mediums I used. If I keep working on it, I’m going to create a bunch of smear, which I don’t want. So, I’m going to leave it, let it dry a bit, and go back in with a second layer.
For the second, and probably final layer, I will use less medium because again, you want to build the layers according to the fat/lean rule. If there is a third layer, which I doubt there will be on this one, I wouldn’t use any medium on it or very very little because you want the most oil paint (fat) as the top layer.

I played around with her a bit more this morning, and yeah, I think it was her hair that was bugging me. I also widened her face a bit, and added more layers to her face, made it rosier. It looked a bit orange yesterday. My camera didn’t pick up all the layers for some reason, and it looks rather flat. The painting looks better in person, but then, most paintings do, don’t they?
I’m glad I went with my gut, and kept painting. I knew somewhere down the road, I would have pulled this one down to revise it. I’m trying to avoid having to go back at the end of this 365 day project and fix all my mistakes. So, sometimes I need to slow it all down a bit, breathe, and take an extra day or two to finish up a painting. There’s no need to rush.

The more I look at this one, the more I don’t like it. Maybe it’s her hair color? I can’t get the same results with oils that I do with acrylics. Oils are so much darker, not as vibrant. I’m not sure the blue is working here. I’m going to work on it a bit more, but I might end up just wiping it.
