This is the first layer of oils. Yup, I’m doing it again..not posting a finished painting. It’s just not possible to paint these oil portraits in one sitting. I already knew that, but thought maaaybe I could pull it off. Nope.
Here’s why..I work with different oil mediums to thin the oil paint because it’s too thick for me to use out of the tube. In case you don’t know, the mediums can also be used to slow down or speed up your drying time, depending on what your needs are.
Because the fat over lean rule when painting with oils, my first layer is quite thin, and a bit slippery feeling from the mediums I used. If I keep working on it, I’m going to create a bunch of smear, which I don’t want. So, I’m going to leave it, let it dry a bit, and go back in with a second layer.
For the second, and probably final layer, I will use less medium because again, you want to build the layers according to the fat/lean rule. If there is a third layer, which I doubt there will be on this one, I wouldn’t use any medium on it or very very little because you want the most oil paint (fat) as the top layer.

I played around with her a bit more this morning, and yeah, I think it was her hair that was bugging me. I also widened her face a bit, and added more layers to her face, made it rosier. It looked a bit orange yesterday. My camera didn’t pick up all the layers for some reason, and it looks rather flat. The painting looks better in person, but then, most paintings do, don’t they?
I’m glad I went with my gut, and kept painting. I knew somewhere down the road, I would have pulled this one down to revise it. I’m trying to avoid having to go back at the end of this 365 day project and fix all my mistakes. So, sometimes I need to slow it all down a bit, breathe, and take an extra day or two to finish up a painting. There’s no need to rush.
It will be available in my various online shops once it dries. You can contact me if you want me to reserve it for you.

The more I look at this one, the more I don’t like it. Maybe it’s her hair color? I can’t get the same results with oils that I do with acrylics. Oils are so much darker, not as vibrant. I’m not sure the blue is working here. I’m going to work on it a bit more, but I might end up just wiping it.

The slight change I mentioned last week is I’m putting away the 5x7s and acrylic paints for a few weeks, and going back to oils. I’m going to try to stay focused on these for at least 30 days because I still have a bunch of 4×4 panels that I need to use up. I might pop in with a 5×7 here and there, tho, just for old time’s sake. I’ve found a new love with the 5x7s, if you haven’t noticed.
I’m not sure yet if I’m going to buy more of the 4x4s. I’m leaning towards oh hell no, at least not at this time. While I love painting the minis, there’s a lot of work involved, having to come up with a different drawing/design for each one. Plus all the photographing, editing photos, writing the listings..blah blah. Quite honestly, if I paint larger, the amount of work is dramatically decreased, and I make a lot more money when a larger painting sells. The incentive to keep painting them isn’t there.
It’s still going to take a while to get through all of them because I keep finding more stashed away (about 90, I think. ugh) that I’d forgotten about. I’m going to split them up over 3 months, and not try to paint all of them at once. Maybe I need to work on my little problem with hoarding art supplies?
This painting will be listed in my various online shops in a few weeks after it’s dried. Prints are available now.

This one started out with her looking back over her bare shoulder. As I painted, she turned toward me, somehow. Her hair grew, and she put some clothes on. I guess she wasn’t ready to be exposed on the internet.
If you look closely, you can see where I got the title.
