Keep grinding
When we sit down day after day and keep grinding, something mysterious starts to happen… Unseen forces enlist in our cause; serendipity reinforces our purpose. Steven Pressfield

This is what 100 hardboard panels look like. On one hand, it’s exciting to have all these blank slates staring back at me. On the other hand, I think the worst part about getting new substrate is all the time it takes to prep them. So, right after I receive a new order from Blick, I know it’s going to take me 2 or 3 days to do all the prep work. Each side of the panel gets two coats of gesso. I like to protect the wood, and I think it lasts longer/looks nicer if the back is painted, also. I have fans setup in my studio year round, so it keeps drying time to a minimum, but still..it’s A LOT of work. These are hidden time sinks. Three days is a looong time to go without pay, so I have to keep it in mind when I price my paintings. Are you giving yourself an hourly wage?
Harold said to wish you a happy weekend. 🙂
When you’re not happy with a painting change it
Before and after
The painting on the left was okay, but I didn’t like it. I put it online about a week ago, and took it down the next day to revise it. I photographed it again, and relisted it. The photo above on the left was taken after the first revision I made. I thought I could live with it the way it was, but it kept gnawing at me. I still didn’t like it, but I had already revised it once. I kept asking myself if I really wanted to go through all that again. It’s a lot of work to pull something down that’s already online. Still, the thought of this painting hanging on someone’s wall nearly drove me crazy. I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I disliked it. I knew I couldn’t let it go out the door like this, so I changed it. Boy, did I, huh?
Whoa, right?!
The only thing I left the same was the vase. I changed the flowers, and background. Now, I like it..finally. No, actually I LOVE it. I think it might be my new favorite.
This painting took me about a month to paint, but it taught me a good lesson. If I’m not happy with a painting, I need to keep working on it until I am. Otherwise, it’s going to cost me much more time and energy. I’ve photographed and edited photos of this painting 3 times. If I had just listened to the little voice inside my head telling me to slow down, and keep painting, it would have saved me a ton of work.

29 Faces
I decided to go ahead and finish all 29 faces. I know I’m a couple days early, but I didn’t want to spread it out until next Wednesday, which will be well into March. Instead, I doubled up on faces for a couple days, and somehow got through it. Whew! After two months of participating in painting challenges, 59 paintings altogether, I’m very happy to be done.
