Farmhouse abstract painting on a block of wood
Abstract No 114
Prints are available here
I’ve had this little block of wood lying around for years, and I decided to spruce it up a bit. My opinion of the painting went from meh to “I LOVE IT” in a matter of minutes.
If you like to see how I paint other paintings, you’re in luck! During the month of May, I’ll be uploading a video daily between my two channels. Be sure to subscribe, so you don’t miss out. I won’t be posting every video here on my blog.
Monday through Thursday, I’ll be uploading abstract, floral, and bird painting videos here.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I’ll be uploading portrait painting videos here.
Hope you’re having a wonderful week. I’ll see you over on youtube. 🙂 xo

It’s raining.
It’s pouring.
The old man is snoring.
And, Beaver is keeping watch over Harold as he sleeps.
It’s been a day full of thunderstorms. Just as one exits, another one emerges out of nowhere. Luckily nothing tornadic or scary. Last night they were saying egg size hail, and 75 mph winds, which was concerning.
Poor little Pea Doodle is terrified of storms. I feel so helpless because she won’t let me comfort her. I tried twice last night to pick her up, but ended up getting scratched both times. All she wanted to do was pace. 🙁 As soon as the hail stopped, she came running to me for a snuggle, and then she slept with me all night. Aww..
Tomorrow is May 1st, which means I will begin uploading daily painting videos on youtube for the next 31 days. I’m excited, but I have to be honest. I’m already starting to wonder what I’ve gotten myself into. I knew that daily painting videos would be time consuming, but I figured an hour or two a day, tops. ha ha! What a fool I am. I have been editing one video for over 9 hours today, and I’m still not done yet.

Even though I did figure out how to embed video into my email subscriptions, I’ve decided I’m not going to blog daily during the month of May. It’s going to be challenging enough for me to upload video every day, I don’t want to throw blogging into the mix, also. So, if you don’t want to miss out, you’ll have to subscribe to my youtube channels by following these links..
Monday through Thursday, I’ll be uploading abstract, floral, and bird painting videos here.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I’ll be uploading portrait painting videos here.
Hope you’re having a wonderful week. I’ll see you over on youtube bright and early in the morning (8 am central). 🙂 I’m going to kick it off with a white abstract farmhouse painting.

I filmed the making of this painting, and I’ll be uploading videos daily for the entire month of May.

I threw this old gesso jar out the other day because there was so much dried up gesso around the cover, and rim it made it difficult to close. With the hot weather coming, I don’t want to take any chances of having my gesso dry out. It’s time for a new jar. I had to take a few shots of the old one first, and say my goodbyes. It has served me well for the past few years.
Aw..goodbye.
::sniff sniff::
If you can’t tell,
I regret tossing it out now.

The sky is always there for me,
while my life has been going through
many, many changes.
When I look up at the sky,
it gives me a nice feeling,
like looking at an old friend.
Yoko Ono
I have always felt the same way, which is why I take so many sky photos. I also like that the sky changes so rapidly, and what I capture is usually gone forever within seconds. Makes it more challenging to photograph because you gotta be quick.
Fabulous idea I found on Pinterest from the Create Thrive website.
She wrote, “The idea is to get everything down for the day before you’ve even answered your first email or checked your social media or online store. It’s a focussing exercise which allows more space in your mind for getting the things done which are vital that day.” You can read more here.
What a great tool to figure out what you reallllly want to do versus what you have to do..or what you think you have to do. If you’re like me, you get so caught up in the “must do” that you have no clue what you want to do, sometimes.

I started reading a couple new books this week. One I gave up on already because meh. It was a serial killer story that mirrors BTK, which I didn’t know until I started reading it. I remember vividly the BTK scare when he was threatening another murder in Wichita back in 2004 – 2005. Don’t want to be reminded of him, that period of time or the heinous murders he committed.
Moving on, I switched to something completely different, The Murmur of Bees, and it’s a much better story. I’m only about 50 pages in, but I can tell it’s going to be a fast read.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Have you read any outstanding books lately?
Just call me the cat whisperer. I was sitting cross legged in the chair outside, having a moment of zen, when this sweet boy wandered into the yard. He jumped up in my lap, purred up a storm, took a long nap, and we’ve been besties ever since. I don’t know what his name is, so I’ve been calling him Mister. I’m pretty sure he has a home nearby because he looks well cared for, and fed.
I painted the bird below, and then saw this amazing sunset a couple hours later, which resembles my painting..sorta. I think the universe was copying me. 😉
Lots of commotion in the studio over the weekend. I started to revise some bird paintings, and also painted an abstract. I filmed the entire process, and will be sharing the videos sometime next month.

In case you haven’t heard, I’ll be uploading videos daily for the entire month of May. Since getting the new YT channel for palette knife painting, I’m been going back and forth on which channel to use next month. I’ve already got several portrait painting videos edited, so I’ve decided I’m going to split up the 31 days between both of my yt channels.
Monday thru Thursday, I’ll be uploading palette knife painting videos here. There will be lots of abstracts, some florals, and bird paintings.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I’ll be uploading portrait painting videos here.
Be sure to click the links, and subscribe now, so you don’t miss out. 🙂
Baby Harold & Maude video
I don’t think I’ll be daily blogging the process because for some reason videos show up as blank space for my email subscribers. It would get super annoying to receive 31 empty emails.
I’m going to try a different way of embedding the video today to see if I can get it to go through. If this works, I’ll consider blogging every day, but if not, you’ll just have to sub to my channels.
This little bug woke me up around 5 this morning. I didn’t go to sleep until about 1am. It’s been a long day.
blurry shot taken in the dark
This little one is just as much a night owl as Harold. We were outside playing ball at 3 am a couple nights ago. Who needs sleep around here, anyway? I sure hope my neighbors didn’t mind.
I’m off to clean my studio..what a mess!
PS: if you’re subscribed to my blog, please let me know if the video above came through, and if you’re not subscribed, whatcha waiting for? Sign up is below. 🙂
Monday, April 15th
Woohoo, Monday! Even though I usually work 7 days a week, the start of a brand new week is always exciting to me. Can’t wait to see what I accomplish. I hope to get the rest of my studio walls patched, and painted. I also hope to get at least 5 new videos filmed, and edited. Gotta stay ahead of the game, y’know? Right now, it’s early morning, and the cats are telling me it’s breakfast time. That reminds me of this hilarious photo I took a couple months ago..
I don’t know if I’ve told you this, but Harold is a little snitch..he does this “follow me, Mom, I need to show you something” thing whenever one of the other cats does something he deems “wrong”. Usually it’s because someone got up on my desk or studio table, and knocked something on the floor while I was sleeping. He needs to be the one to break the news to me, always. lol
He led me to the kitchen a couple months back..someone (more than likely it was Harold himself 😀 ) opened the cabinet, and tried to get into the cat food. I keep their dry food in plastic bowls.
I snapped a pic of him telling me all about what happened (meoooow meowww, meeeeow, in case you were wondering what he said, this was it..word for word. I swear! 😉 ) and I caught him with his mouth open. Looks like he’s absolutely shocked something like this could ever happen in our house. LMAO 😀 😀 😀
BREAKING NEWS ALERT!!
Harold has now lawyered up, and word has it that he hired the best lawyers in town. He’s paying them by letting them pet him, and give him kitty treats. Court case is still pending. We’ll have to see how this goes.
Tuesday, April 16th
Not only did I paint my studio walls yesterday, but I also painted 3/4 of the living room. Wooo!! The bluish purple is mostly GONE!! I’m sure you’ll see the color I chose in the background of some of my photos soon, but in the meantime, you’ll have to imagine a light gray/off white color. You thought I’d say I painted it PINK, didn’t you? lol haha..nope, but I hope to have a lot of pink accent to make up for the lack.
The color theme of the house is going to be grayscale..mostly white, off white/light gray with a tad bit of dark gray, and a hint of black.
I have wanted a grayscale house ever since I was about 9 years old, and saw my aunt’s black & white kitchen for the first time. I loved the lack of color then, and I still love it now.
incoming storm
This week is starting out all about the house, so I’m going to need to shift gears, and get back into the studio today.

Scritching Sweet Pea’s ear
The studio didn’t happen yesterday. My husband installed a filtered water system in the kitchen, ran into problems, and it took alllll day. I was on standby, in case he needed something while he was lying on his back under the sink. I didn’t want to be constantly interrupted while painting, especially now that I’m filming everything I paint.
mini portrait painting
I was able to get some photos edited, but didn’t accomplish all that much. The most productive thing I did was trim the kitchen & bathroom curtains last night, which was a chore I’ve been putting off for 4 months now. I had every intention of hemming them, also. Turned out that since moving, I have nooo idea where my sewing stuff is, so I wasn’t able to hem them. It’s okay, tho. I’ll get around to it evidently..or not. haha!
Little backstory..I’m not a big fan of sewing. I have to YT how to thread my machine every time I use it. lol I also have no idea where the straight stitch setting is, so whatever I sew has a zigzag pattern. I laugh soooo hard at my ignorance every time I attempt to sew anything. 😀 😀 😀
I’m having studio withdrawal symptoms, so I MUST paint today.

Wouldn’t you know it..I finally got into the studio yesterday, and BAM. I suddenly wasn’t feeling all that creative or motivated. haha Good thing I never let that stop me, eh? I pushed through my negativity, and managed to record 3 videos, but I felt meh about the paintings I made. Looking at them with fresh eyes this morning, I kinda like them now. I’m thinking maybe a tweak or two will make me fall in love with them. I’ll work on that today. 🙂
Some succeed because they are destined to,
but most succeed because they are determined to.

I’m usually not interested in the flavor of the week, but I started listening to her, and now I’m addicted, just like all y’all. 😀 Also, in love with Ricky Gervais, and his Netflix show.
Before I go, I’m having a 25% sale in both of my Etsy shops. All items are on sale, including prints. If you need some new art for your walls, check it out here: Miz Katie (portraits), and Art by Katie Jeanne (florals, birds, and abstracts)
Hope you have a fantastic week..what’s left of it. I’m going to be in the studio all day tomorrow, so I’ll be sure to catch you up on what happens next week.
Friday, April 5th
It’s been a crazy upside kind of day. Had lots of life going on, which took me away from my studio. But hey, I managed to update my About page last night. Check it out if you’re curious! 🙂
Saturday, April 6th
Leaves are coming out, and the grass is long enough to cut now.
80F to 85F is in the forecast for the next several days.
I started working on a new Youtube channel today. I’m still going to keep my Miz Katie channel for portraits, but I’ve decided (finally!!) that I need a separate channel for my palette knife paintings. Now here comes my dilemma. I’m not sure which channel I want to use when I upload videos for 31 days in May. Hm..decisions. If you have a preference let me know in the comments. Portraits or palette knife painting?

Foggy morning
As soon as I saw how foggy it was, I had to get outside to photograph it quickly before it was gone. When I pulled this photo up in photoshop, I saw the bird flying into the trees. I didn’t see him this morning.
My grandmother used to say “luck, luck, luck” in her thick New England accent every time she saw a lone crow or blackbird. I think the superstition was if you saw one bird alone it meant you were doomed for sorrow because the bird had lost its mate. Saying “luck, luck, luck” immediately reversed your bad luck, and all was well.
If my grandmother saw two birds together it meant she was going to have good luck (or was it joy?) that day, and 3 birds meant it was time to check the post office box. She was going to get a letter (let-TAH). 😀
I’m not superstitious, but upon seeing the bird in this photo, I quickly said out loud, “luck, luck, luck”. I’d advise you to do the same..from now on. Life is difficult. Don’t want to take any chances. 😉
portrait painting
I’ll have to look at her later, and decide, but I think I finally finished her today.
BEFORE
It’s been a long studio day. I pulled a HUGE stack paintings out of storage, so I can revise them. Now that my storage space is limited to a tiny broom closet, I’m definitely not going to keep paintings around that I don’t like. I’m going to spend the next few months revising paintings, but it will be worth it.
The one above is one I painted about 4 years ago, but never offered it for sale because I didn’t like it. After giving it a second look, I like the comp, but the colors were all wrong for my style.

Wednesday, April 10th
I spent the entire day with my pal Photoshop today. After a painting spree, I know I have days of work ahead of me photographing, scanning, and editing the photos..kinda takes the fun out of painting for me, if I think of all the work I’m making for myself while I’m painting.
Sooo,
no painting today.
Just 14 hours spent
in Photoshop,
so how about
a photo or two?
I think these abstracts deserve a bit of the spotlight. All the layers are quite lovely when seen up close. This one happens to be my favorite.

Diversity
These paintings are all small works on paper, similar to the portrait paintings I did a few weeks ago.
I tried something different, and titled the paintings before I started to paint. Usually, I save titling for last, but I wanted to give Bob Burridge’s idea of choosing a word/title from a thesaurus before picking up a brush or knife. Just close your eyes, open a page, and plunk your finger down on a word. Bam! You have yourself a title.
It gave me a jumping off place to begin, and something to think about as I painted. Not only that, but sometimes a blank or white canvas can be intimidating, especially when you go for long periods of time without painting abstracts.
Irreconcilable
The painting above represents me trying my hardest to make friends with the color purple. I actually don’t mind this shade I mixed as much, but I still have a beef with the color. I’m making an effort to get along with it best I can. 😀
For this piece, I purposely chose colors that clash with one another because the word I blindly chose out of the thesaurus was “Irreconcilable”. I think the hearts, particularly the way I laid them out, are self explanatory. Maybe? It represents love/hate to me.
