Ever since I painted this portrait in 2010, there have been little things about it that bugged me. I decided I didn’t want to let it go out into the world with tiny flaws, so I spent a couple days revising it. I wish I could show you this one in person because it’s sooo much better than in the photographs. If you like what you see here, you will absolutely LOVE it when you’re holding it in your own hands.

Goodbye Emma Tum Tum

My little girl passed away yesterday.
Not a great Mother’s Day gift to me.

I rescued Emma from a falling down shack back in 2002,
although it seems like yesterday.

It’s so weird. I thought she’d live forever, that cat.
She wasn’t sick a day in her life,
and she played hard, like a kitten every single day.
But, she dropped dead out by the rose bushes.
Just like that..she was here,
now she’s gone,
and that makes me sad.

This poem resonates with me. I’ve been gone from my childhood hometown for 18 years. I have never regretted the decision to leave. Yet, I do wonder sometimes how my life would be different, if I had listened to the voices (including my own) who told me not to go. If we get a second chance at life, a do over, a reincarnation of sorts..because no one really knows for sure what happens, until they’re dead, right?..maybe next time I’ll stay, and see what happens. 😉 xoxo

The Journey 

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save
the only life you could save.
