Late September
The mail truck goes down the coast
Carrying a single letter.
At the end of a long pier
The bored seagull lifts a leg now and then
And forgets to put it down.
There is a menace in the air
Of tragedies in the making.
Last night you thought you heard television
In the house next door.
You were sure it was some new
Horror they were reporting,
So you went out to find out.
Barefoot, wearing just shorts.
It was only the sea sounding weary
After so many lifetimes
Of pretending to be rushing off somewhere
And never getting anywhere.
This morning, it felt like Sunday.
The heavens did their part
By casting no shadow along the boardwalk
Or the row of vacant cottages,
Among them a small church
With a dozen gray tombstones huddled close
As if they, too, had the shivers.

RAIN, Jonathan Meese, What I’m reading

It’s a rainy (I can’t believe it!! I can’t believe it’s raining!!) springlike day. Excuse my excitement, but we’ve been in a drought for over 2 years. It never rains here, so this is truly exciting. The ground is sopping wet, and I am happy dancing around my studio. I LOVE RAIN. I love rain sooo much.

It’s going to be 66F today, and 68F 75!!! tomorrow. Makes me wonder if spring is here. February is a weird month here in Kansas. It can be very spring-like, in the 80s, like the past two years, or it can be very very cold and wintry. There were a couple years, we got a ton of snow and ice in February, so one can never tell. All I know is IT’S RAINING!!! and that means it’s going to be a GREAT day. la la laaa la laaa

When I checked my email a couple days ago, I noticed Greg had sent me a link to this video. The first 20 seconds in, I thought..what the heck? I’m not watching this!! It seems a bit nutty, and I was really groggy from taking Benadryl, and not fully functioning. Another minute, and I was like, wow, who is this guy? I was completely sucked in, and reading every word of the subtitles. By the end of the video, the Benadryl had worn off, my internal battery was completely charged up, and I was ready to paint!! I LOVE this guy!! I’m not sure I understood every word he said, but he definitely has some very valid points.

Book I’m reading: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott She’s a very interesting lady. You can read Secrets & Surprises about her here. If you don’t know much about her, like me, her not so secret secrets will surprise you. It’s hard to believe she lived so long ago. She appears to be so very modern.

my word for the year..

I didn’t think I was going to pick one this year. The more I thought about choosing a word, the more I thought maybe this isn’t the year for a word. So, I put it out of my mind for a few days, and yesterday, a word jumped out at me. I gasped, and thought, that’s it! That’s the word I’ve been looking for, and I knew I had to use it. So, my word for the year is Balance, and it’s a big one for me.

When I started painting in 2008, I knew that I was hooked. I was obsessed. It’s taken me all this time to realize just how obsessed I’ve been. When I’m painting, which is daily, I rarely do anything else. I just paint, and paint, and this goes on for 20 hours straight sometimes. Whew. I haven’t been writing or reading or doing much of anything. It’s nice to love my job. It really is, but I’m starting to miss all the stuff I have neglected and put aside for too long.

And the days are not full enough
And the nights are not full enough

Sooo, this year is the year for balance. I still want to paint, sure, but I want to add other things back into my life, and if that means painting a little less, then I’ll paint less. Gulp. Kinda scary thought, but I’m gonna be strong, and do this. lol

I’ve started to write again, which is a good first step. I started a new writing journal last week, and I am thrilled. I have no idea why I stopped writing. I left behind my first love, words, when I picked up the paint brushes. It’s good to find my way back. I’m also missing books in my life. I have recently begun to read again. Tablets are awesome for reading, lots of free ebooks every day. Poems will be a weekly blog post this year. I have missed poetry so much. Now I’m forcing myself to read poetry, so I’ll find a new poem to post each week. lol Hey, whatever works. Keep me accountable. Check back on Mondays to make sure I did my homework.

Here’s to 2013 being the year I find balance!
