The artist committing himself to his calling has volunteered for hell, whether he knows it or not. He will be dining for the duration on a diet of isolation, rejection, self-doubt, despair, ridicule, contempt, and humiliation. ― Steven Pressfield
Had I only known this years ago, I might not have gotten in this deep.
ps: this painting is comical to me because I don’t know anything about fashion, nor do I care about it. I own only a few items of clothing that aren’t splattered with paint, ripped or stained. The words just happened to stand out to me on a big collage paper sheet, and I know how important fashion is to most women.

Resistance is not a peripheral opponent. Resistance arises from within. It is self-generated and self-perpetuated. Resistance is the enemy within. ― Steven Pressfield
I’ve heard so much about the book called The War of Art, but I never was interested in reading it. I thought it was some rah rah get in the studio and paint kind of book. I don’t have any trouble making large quantities of art. I’m not afraid of it, and I never tire of doing it. Sure, I’ve had a couple dry spells, here and there over the years, but for the most part, I get into the studio and paint. No problem there, so I didn’t think the book was a worthwhile read.
About a month or so ago, I saw it on sale at Amazon, so I figured, eh, why not see what all the fuss has been about. It’s a short book, which can be read in less than a two hours. Yet, here I am on day 3 because I’m finding that I must read, and reread parts of it to let it really sink in.
Steven writes about the differences between being an amateur and a pro. The path between the two has a great deal of resistance. hm..I had never given much thought to resistance before. Once I started to examine it, tho, whoa! Truth is, I am coming up against resistance hard every single day.
I don’t resist painting, and because of that, painting is easy for me. To be an artist in this day and age, it’s not only about painting, tho. There are many hats to wear throughout the day when you’re in this business. Maybe if I was rich, I’d hire an agent or manager, but that’s not the case. Like most artists, I have to do all the hustling myself, and this is where the resistance, for me, comes in.
I resist getting my work out there. I have no problem listing my work for sale on various online venues, but I absolutely loathe any form of social media, marketing, and (gasp!) writing blog posts. Yes, that’s right, I said it, I don’t like blogging. I literally have to force myself to do any of these things. I’m pretty sure, although I try to hide it, it’s obvious most of the time. There is great resistance, and I’m not sure exactly why. I’m going to get to the bottom of it, but I have to dig deeper first. So, surprisingly, I think this book is going to be a real game changer for me. I recommend reading it if you’re feeling any sort of resistance anywhere in your life.
Water-babies
oil portrait painting
Daily painting day 23/365
Since I had leftover fleshy toned oil paint on my palette from the two black and white portraits I finished last week, I decided to use it up. I hate to have paint go to waste. I still want to go in with another layer or two, but that will mean mixing more paint. That in turn, will lead to more leftover paint because I’m not good at judging how much I’ll need. Oils are tricky that way. I always mix too much, and then I’ll be forced to paint another oil painting. Don’t get me wrong, most of the time, I prefer using oils, but because of the long drying time, I’m more into acrylics right now. So, I’m just going to go ahead, and post this unfinished.
It might show up again in an altered state sometime in the near future. Or I just might wipe the entire painting, and call it practice. I don’t love it or feel any attachment to it at this point.
“water-babies” just happened to be there on the collage paper, so I left it, for now.
Get What You Want

Day 22/365

I was listening to a Ted Talks while I was painting this. The message that kept coming through was “get what you want outta life”. It made me think of all the times people have said to me, “I wish I could paint,” or “I’d love to be an artist, but..” and then they list off a million excuses why they’re not painting. No talent, have a 40 hr week job, family, responsibilities, sick parents..you name it, I’ve heard it. It always makes me a little sad.
My advice is this, cut the bs out of your life. If you really want to be an artist, then the answer is to paint every day – even if it’s only for 10 to 30 minutes. Get up an hour earlier, and grab a brush or knife. If you can’t do it every day, then make a plan, and stick to it. Commit to 2 or 3 days or maybe Saturday afternoons. Anything is better than nothing. Don’t let anyone/anything get in the way of your studio time. It’s as simple as that. You follow a plan, and guess what, you’re an artist. Boom! Stop wishing. Start doing. Get what you want.

Work in progress shot
I thought it was done at this point, but then I shot a photo of it. Looking at it on the screen, I knew it was unfinished, so back to the studio it went.
I’m not sure if I like the busy background, so I grayed it out in Photoshop to see what it would look like. I’m a minimalist at heart, so I prefer the gray. What do you think?

Daily painting day 20/365
This is the other b&w oil portrait that has been sitting on my shelf for a month or more. I finally finished it. Yay! As much as I’ve enjoyed painting Virginia Woolf three times this summer, I’m happy to be moving on now. I can’t wait to get back to my more colorful characters inside my mind, who are banging on the bars of their cage to be let out on canvas. 😀
Ultimately, your theme will find you. You don’t have to go looking for it.

Daily painting day 19/365
I’m kinda getting off track a little, I realize this. I said just a couple days ago that this month was all about 5×7 acrylic mixed media portraits, and I wouldn’t be changing it up until the 24th. Just as soon as I wrote those words, I wanted to change everything!! I’m such a flip flopping rebel when it comes to creating art..or maybe it goes even deeper than that (it does!). ha! Sometimes, I swear I make up stupid rules for myself just so I can break every last one of them.
Hell, there are no rules here; we’re trying to accomplish something.
Thomas Edison
Here’s the thing, I’ve put off finishing this painting for over a month now, so I figured since the mood struck me that I better ride that wave. I don’t ever leave paintings unfinished (anymore). Taking my hesitation to finish these portraits into consideration, I’m not exactly sure if I’m going to continue this black and white series. Or if I should call it a series at all at this point.
The timing seems off to me. I think a b&w series is something I’d be more interested in doing in the middle of the winter when I’m feeling more poetic. Right now I’m all about color, and character development. I want to continue to explore the Raw Storytelling series I’ve been doing for the past 4 or 5 weeks, and see where it leads me. That said, I’m going to shelf the b&w series, for now. I’ll leave the option open for sometime down the road.
And now that I’ve said that, I’ll want to paint more b&w paintings, no doubt.
