It has taken me years to finally finish this abstract painting. There are layers and layers beneath the surface. I’m finally ready to let it go, and call it done.
You can’t buy happiness,
but you can buy ice cream
and that’s kind of the same thing.

It feels amazing to be painting large once again. I have been painting mostly miniatures and small paintings now for 3 years. To go from that small to this large felt intimidating to me, but I stuck with it. I want to get comfortable painting larger, so I’m happy I am taking the summer to experiment with abstract painting.
If my vision was better…if I wasn’t blind in my left eye..if I had depth perception, and no astigmatism causing poor vision in my right eye, I would paint large portraits, also. That’s a whole lot of ifs. As it is, I don’t feel confident in getting the proportions right.
When I was a kid, I used to think,
‘Man, if I could ever afford all the ice cream I want to eat,
that’s as rich as I ever want to be.

I guess I could try using an app to help me trace a face on the canvas, but Idk? I’d rather sketch it myself, but I know how badly I suck at it. When I paint small, I can wear my glasses, and use a magnifying glass. When I’m painting large, I need to see the big picture, and it’s difficult to do. Because I’m near and farsighted in my right eye, I have to stand away from the canvas on order to see it clearly, and then I can’t reach it to draw or paint. I’m not even sure if I can see well enough to use a tracing app, but I might give it a try sometime.
Until then, I’ve been thinking about creating some new abstract portraits with palette knives, which will be super fun. Probably won’t be as large as this painting, but we’ll see.
Hope you had a lovely 4th of July weekend. xo

Crayola oil pastels are as awesome as
Blackbean says they are, gurrrrl.
Had to try them for myself,
and oh, my!
Really impressed.
I can see why these are his favorite.

Crossed out because I wasn’t feeling it,
but not blocked out completely
because I like to keep my options open.

The colors of these pastels are quite vivid, and rich. I haven’t had a chance to spend a lot of time messing around with them, but so far, I love them. I’m not an expert by any means when it comes to oil pastels. Basically, I use them to make marks and layers in my work. I don’t sit down and draw something with them, but I like how they’re creamy, but not too creamy. And, not too waxy, which I was afraid they might be. Crayola will probably be my go-to brand for oil pastels now, also.
I have some other Crayola art supplies that are meh – definitely okay for kids, but didn’t work well for me. These pastels are different. They don’t feel like a cheap art supply made for kids. I highly recommend them, and will be buying more.

Brighten the Winter Gloom
Acrylic mixed media
portrait painting
Available here
I painted this one a few months back, hence the title. It was one I revised, and thought a big flower in her hair would brighten the cold, gray days we were having back then. It’s hard to remember those winter days when it was 106F outside today. At least the humidity is gone, but I hope her flower doesn’t wilt. 🙂 I also hope you’re staying cool. xo

So over the weekend, I got my easel out from the corner of my studio for the first time since I moved here 2.5 years ago. It was still taped up so it wouldn’t slide up or down while being transported here by the movers. I can’t believe it’s been so long since I used my easel, but judging by all the dust and cat hair on it, it’s definitely been that long. ha!
I was inspired by this art journal page I painted a week ago, and I wanted to re-paint it as best as possible on the large 30×40 inch canvas that hangs above my couch.
I created this painting back in the fall, so it was time to change it up a bit. I like to change the art on my walls every few months, usually seasonally, to keep things fresh. Sometimes that means taking down the large paintings, and painting over them.
I did a quick layer as I was looking at my art journal to get the colors somewhat where they need to be. The paint was pretty thick, so I hung it back up on the wall to dry, and to get a feel for what it will look like once it’s back in its place.
I can tell the colors aren’t right yet. For one thing, it’s almost summer, and these are fall colors. And two, even though orange works well in my art journal, I don’t think it works for my living room..at least not now. The painting used to be orange, and I liked it, but I’m looking for a change. I didn’t think of that until I saw the painting up on the wall. This is an okay start, but I’m going to change the colors.
Miss Pea Doodle Doo was helping me hang it back up.
Thank you, baby girl.

More photos to come as I work through this large abstract painting.
Here are more abstracts I painted last week..

This week I worked on cleaning up my Etsy shop to make it easier to navigate. I used to have all my prints together in one category, which made finding a specific one difficult. Between the active and expired listings, I have 300 or 400 prints, so I had to scroll a lot. I thought, if I’m scrolling this much, so are others visiting my shop.
I separated all the prints into categories – abstract prints, animal prints, floral prints, and portrait prints. It’s soooo much easier now to find what you’re looking for.
I also decided to change the bird paintings category to “Animals”. I should have done this long ago because I paint cats, bears, dogs, cows, and at least two white horses so far. I want to add to this animal series, maybe this coming winter? You can find all my animal paintings in one spot now, along with prints here.
I wish we could make subcategories to drill down more, but Etsy’s limited. We’re only allowed 20 categories, period. I had to delete several of my old categories to fit all the prints in there. We’re not allowed subcategories, which would make life so much easier. Ah, well. Maybe some day? Etsy, you listening? We really could use this upgrade. Etsy follows me on Twitter, maybe I’ll tweet them.
Today, I’m working on adding a brand new category to my Etsy shop, which is exciting. I’ll tell you more about it soon, if all goes well. 🙂

I hope you have a lovely weekend. If you need me, I’ll be in the studio trying to stay cool. It’s miserably hot & humid here. My ac has been running non-stop around the clock. The air outside is thick like soup. I worry about the homeless, and people who don’t have working air..it’s brutal out there. Please stay safe. xo

I’m in the process of making a new little booklet with a dream or nighttime theme. I love the cover so much that I decided to clean it up in Photoshop, and offer it as a print.
I’m using new (to me) acrylic paint on this project. The brand is Dynamic Distraction, and I bought a set of 24 on Amazon. I had a coupon, so it only ended up costing me $5.60, which was a steal. Try to find coupons when you buy from Amazon because sometimes the savings can be huge. In this case, the coupon was worth $10.39.
Although it’s a little watery, I like the paint. The only issue I have is the color on the outside of the tubes doesn’t match the color inside the tubes. It can be a little confusing, but I think I’ll survive. lol
Sweet Dreams
celestial print
for bedroom, child’s room or nursery
Available here
Prints start at only $13
For the print, I changed the font, and added some stars and planets. I think it would be perfect for a bedroom wall, in a child’s room, or nursery. I hope you like it as much as I do, and that you have sweet dreams tonight. 🙂 xo
