9×12 Oil Pastel Portrait
May 2022
No 13
I’m numbering these only for the sake of blog posts.
Eventually they will have proper titles,
once I get to that stage.
I drew this portrait with it lying sideways because the travel tray/lap table I use isn’t wide enough to hold a 9×12 inch paper, but it fits perfectly if I turn the paper sideways. From my angle, her mouth looked fine, not droopy at all. It wasn’t until I turned the paper around that I noticed how crooked her mouth was. Oops! I’m going to need to pay attention to this from now on because it created quite a mess for me to clean up.
Luckily, I discovered it before I had spent oodles of time on the drawing, but what I didn’t know at the time was, I was about to make another mistake trying to fix my mistake.
Without thinking, I grabbed a dark pastel..looks like maybe a navy blue one, and I straightened out the drooping. It was then I suddenly was faced with another issue..like, what the heck had I just done? I now had what looked like a giant “less than” math sign on her face to deal with. Oh dear.
My stupidity cracks me up now,
but at the time not so much.
lol
Have I mentioned I’m new to this oil pastel drawing thing? This mistake made me realize I’m still thinking as a painter, not a drawer using oil pastels. I went in with this dark navy blue color, thinking I could easily layer over the top of it, like I can with paint. WRONG. Pastels don’t work that way, and when I tried to lighten the dark, all I got was a horrible looking dark smudge – not at all what I was looking for. Oof!
I ended up scraping the dark blue pastel off using my steel pottery scraper, as best as possible, and went in with a lighter pastel to clean up the mess I made. Ah..much better.
The background got a little smudged with my fingerprints, and little spots here and there from the pastels. I was able to add lots of distraction to the background, so the smudges aren’t noticeable..I’ll show you the final drawing soon. I’m still tweaking it slightly here and there.
I love how incredibly messy this looks, and that my phone is able to pick up all the details. I don’t normally take macro photos of my work, but I definitely am now.
