rosy cheeks
art journal pages
Keeping it short today because I only had time to paint two pages last week. I’ve been super busy packaging up orders, and shipping them out. Nice problem to have, I know. 🙂

I listened to this interview with Rob Kalin, the founder of Etsy, on NPR. Thought I would share it here.
Can I just say that I miss the days when Rob was running the site, and that I haven’t been excited the direction Etsy has been heading? There used to be honest-to-goodness handmade content on the site, and ONLY handmade at that time. Since Rob was fired, things have changed A LOT. Now, your guess is as good as mine if something was really made by hand or not. Look at a listing, and flip a coin, I say. A lot of top selling shops claim they’re handmade, but it’s pretty obvious they’re buying their items from alibaba. It gets me that they buy items for 20 cents, and sell them for $30+. Now that’s a way to make a profit, eh?
I keep seeing buyers complaining about the lack of real handmade items in the Etsy forums. It’s a sad reality that Etsy is no longer handmade, even though they still claim they are. I can assure you MY stuff is hand painted by me, and only me, not by a machine or in a sweatshop in China.
Because I don’t like having all my eggs in one basket, I recently started offering my work on Ebay again. You can also visit my shop here on my website. If at any time you see a painting you like, but you don’t want to purchase it through Etsy or Ebay, please know you can purchase it directly through me.

This wintry vision I have in my head comes from a vivid memory I have of my Mom, and how she would tell me to stand outside in the snow with a tiny piece of bread on my hand. She said if I was quiet and still enough, a bird would land on me, and I would get to feed him. aw! How I wanted that to happen!! This is the 14th time I’ve painted this painting, but it’s the first time I’ve ever painted it this large. I usually paint these on either 8×10 or 9×12 canvas. It seems that every time I paint it, my vision/memory changes slightly. The last few I’ve painted, the girls have insisted on wearing party dresses, and I have no idea why. I just do what they tell me to do.
I’m very open to payment plans or layaways. Please contact me, and let me know what works for you, and I’ll put this painting on hold for you. We can set up weekly, bi-weekly or monthly payments. Your choice!!

I have been spending most of May painting abstracts. Well, I’ve been painting other things, too, like a large girl and bird painting, and a large 6 figure painting. I’ve pretty much been in my studio around the clock lately. I thought it was only appropriate to title this one Caught up in Whimsy because that’s the life I’m living at the moment, and I couldn’t be happier.
A little video
(24 seconds)
I filmed myself painting a couple weeks ago, but it didn’t turn out so good. Number one, I didn’t like the painting at all, which happens a lot when I try to film myself painting. I don’t paint like I normally do for some reason. I think I get camera fright or something. Number two, I had the camera settings wrong, and it was overexposed. Number 3, I gave my video camera away last year, and now I’m using my slr camera. It’s not easy to set up. I used to set the tripod on the table because the video camera had a swing out, movable lcd window. I could see what I was recording. My camera’s lcd window is attached, and doesn’t move. If I set the tripod on top of the table, unless I stand up on the table, I can’t see if I have the camera positioned right or zoomed in enough. I’m not going to stand on the table. So..the tripod was sitting at a strange angle on the floor, and it was awkward to paint with one arm behind my back, so I wouldn’t bump the camera. I was squished for room, and no wonder I wasn’t painting the way I normally do. I usually move all over the place when I paint, and use both hands because I’m ambidextrous. I draw better with my left hand most of the time, and I paint better when I am flailing all about.
Anyway, yeah, I deleted all the footage, and it’s just as well, but here’s a little clip of some floral paintings I recently did. It’s not the same, but hey, I can say I tried, and that’s all that counts for me.
I still like Magisto a lot, but my membership has lapsed. I only get to upload 10 photos now, which kinda stinks. I didn’t use the site enough to justify spending $35 on it again, tho. Oh, well.
One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.
