My work table is a beat up old thing that has wobbly legs, and is bowed all the way down the middle. If you stand back and look at it from across the room, the top of it resembles a U. If I set a jar of paint on the edge, it’s been known to walk itself to the center of the table in no time. lol
The table was given to me in this condition. I think it once belonged to my husband’s grandfather or someone in his family. It looks handmade with old antique nails. It’s been dear to me for 20 years. I’ve created countless paintings on this table.
Getting paint on this table certainly wouldn’t hurt it any, but I’ve always kept the tabletop covered up. Not so much to protect it, but because it’s not easy to scrape dried acrylics off something made of wood.
I’ve used many different things to cover the surface over the years – taped down trash bags, glassine paper, large sheets of watercolor paper, and even paper grocery bags. It worked, but I prefer a more permanent solution – something I could clean, and reuse over again without having to throw it away.
A couple years ago, I started using clear plastic kitchen cutting mats, and these seem to work the best for me. These mats usually come in a pack of 2 or more, depending on how many you need to cover your area. They’re made for cutting food on, so they’re quite durable.
Cleaning the mats is easy. Every few weeks, I scrape off the hardened on paint, and the mats are good as new. It takes only a couple minutes of my time.
It’s hard to believe all this dried up paint is from drips & splatters, but that’s what it is, indeed. Hello, clean surface. It’s nice to see you again. Now I can get back to work.
