This was a fun exercise I did while watching Draw With Me with Danny Gregory. He has a weekly livestream on Thursdays, and the theme is different each week.
This time, there weren’t any reference photos to look at. Instead, his wife had some old b&w mugshots from the early 1900s, and she described what each person looked like as we drew.
Danny comes up with unusual themes that I would never consider drawing. It’s quite challenging, especially because there’s usually a 2 or 3 min time limit for each drawing. There’s no time to think or criticize your drawing..you just get lines down on the paper as fast as possible.
You can always go back in, and fix or finish things later..or pause the video. I like the idea of drawing fast, racing against the clock, and turning the critic in my brain off. I’m definitely not thinking about the outcome or finished product while I’m doing these exercises.
A couple weeks ago we drew Thanksgiving food with a 2 min timer for each dish. At first my brain was like..oh, heck noooo, I can’t do this. I don’t draw food…how am I supposed to do this?? But, I did it anyway, stuck with it, and my art journal page turned out absolutely hideous. haha! BUT, I had so much fun, and that’s all that counts. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with to draw next.
Don’t think – DRAW! I’m pretty sure Danny says that a lot or maybe that’s the voice inside my head talking to me? Idk? lol

If you haven’t checked out my eBay store in a while, you should. Some artwork I have marked down to only $10 or $15. I add new stuff every single day. Same goes for Etsy.
