I was messing around in my art journal the other night, and realized I didn’t have an eraser on my work table. The only thing I had was this gum eraser pad, and I was too lazy to get up. So, I went with it, and figured I’d document the results.
This thing is like using a sock full of loose eraser powder. It’s flip floppy & weird. I’ve had it kicking around my studio for a few years. It’s one of those art supplies I bought and never use.
Besides erasing pencil lines, you can clean up old books, and papers that have aged or have mold. I’ve never tried it in books, but if you do, I’d suggest testing it out on a book you don’t care about first. Some of the reviews on other brands like this one claim it ruined their books.
It doesn’t do the best job, but it was good enough for what I needed at the time. As you can see, some of the coloring of the paper also came off onto the eraser pad. I thought that was interesting.
It also left a bit of a smudge on the paper, but it wasn’t anything a little paint couldn’t cover up. If this did this in a beloved vintage book, I’d probably not like it, tho.
I don’t recommend these erasers because they’re not the easiest to use, nor do they work as well as other erasers. However, if you want to try one for yourself, you can get them on Amazon. The better, cheaper choice when drawing would be my favorite erasers, which I should have looked for, instead of reaching for this one.
Artists I’ve been admiring:
Illustrations by Claire Fletcher – I saw some of her work posted on X, so I had to google her.
Sophie Treppendahl – such colorful, bold paintings. If/when I get bored painting portraits, I’m going to do a series of interior rooms, and still life paintings. I’m working up to it, slowly. I can feel it percolating inside my brain.
This painting by Jeremy Durling. I can’t stop looking it, and studying it.
Jeremy Miranda‘s work is amazing.
Re-reading:
How To See Color and Paint by Arthur Stern
This book is extremely dry & boring, and makes me want to take a nap, but I seem to get something out of it each time I re-read it. I bought a copy of it years ago. If you want to read it without paying the high price, you can borrow it.
Also reading: The Art Spirit by Robert Henri, which was first published in 1923. It can also be read for free here.
Another book on my list, which I haven’t read yet is Richard Schmid paints landscapes. I would prefer to read his book titled
