I was looking through my stack of old art magazines, and came across a real gem. Inside this Rawvision magazine from 2007, I found an original painting by ZB Armstrong.
It’s one of the double sided Doomsday calendars he made. I keep pinching myself because I didn’t know it was in there. I’ve had the magazine forever, and I can’t recall where I picked it up. Had to be the library or maybe a tag sale? Whoever sold it to me didn’t know the painting was in there, I have to assume.
The magazine features an article about ZB and his work. I can only imagine that someone stuck the painting in the magazine for safe keeping, forgot about it, and donated it to the library sale.
I’ve been trying to decipher the meaning of this painting, and think I have this side figured out. The first column are the days of the week. The second column are the months of the year. The third column says “In God we trust”, and the fourth column is the year he made the art – 1987. I’m still trying to find out the meaning of “BTMS”. He was a religious man, so maybe it’s something from the bible?
Other side of the painting
If you want to read about ZB Armstrong, and see more of his art, visit Webb Gallery. His story is fascinating, and I can’t believe I own a piece of his history. I mean, this painting was created, and used to live with him here. So amazing! If you spot this painting in the photos, please lmk.
There’s also a short video with more of his work here, and a video of ZB in 1986 at his house. I didn’t realize who the lady (Louanne LaRoche) was with ZB until I visited her website, and found out she had written the Rawmagazine article about ZB. What??!! I had instant chills when I read that. It was like coming full circle, and all the pieces of the puzzle I had going on inside my head magically fit together. I had to leave her a comment to let her know my discovery of one of his fabulous paintings tucked within the pages of her article.
Louanne is also an artist herself, and her work is simply amazing. I’ve spent hours looking through her paintings and drawings. There’s so much to see, discover, and study within her work.
I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to keep or sell the artwork. If a collector of ZB Armstrong wants to make me an offer for this piece, please contact me.
