Get What You Want

I was listening to a Ted Talks while I was painting this. The message that kept coming through was “get what you want outta life”. It made me think of all the times people have said to me, “I wish I could paint,” or “I’d love to be an artist, but..” and then they list off a million excuses why they’re not painting. No talent, have a 40 hr week job, family, responsibilities, sick parents..you name it, I’ve heard it. It always makes me a little sad.
My advice is this, cut the bs out of your life. If you really want to be an artist, then the answer is to paint every day – even if it’s only for 10 to 30 minutes. Get up an hour earlier, and grab a brush or knife. If you can’t do it every day, then make a plan, and stick to it. Commit to 2 or 3 days or maybe Saturday afternoons. Anything is better than nothing. Don’t let anyone/anything get in the way of your studio time. It’s as simple as that. You follow a plan, and guess what, you’re an artist. Boom! Stop wishing. Start doing. Get what you want.
