Art never gets boring
One of the things that’s fun about trying out a new art supply is figuring out how to use it that works best for you. Weeks pass, and you might think you know all there is to know when suddenly bam! Without even trying or meaning to, you learn something new, and it takes you by surprise.
This will probably sound silly to those of you who have used oil paint markers forever, but I recently discovered I can build up layers with them. I had never given it any thought before, and the first time I did it, I was like like woah, seriously? You can use these things like paint??!! Okay, okay!
It was like a lightbulb moment, which suddenly changed everything. For the past few weeks I had been drawing one way, and now suddenly that changed in a blink of an eye. Layering markers? Why hadn’t I thought of that before? It should have been something I tried much sooner. Ah well, better late than never.
Making new discoveries like this is what keeps me interested in art. I get bored fairly easily, but when creating, there’s always something new to learn. If it does start to feel like the same old thing after a while, all you have to do is use a new pen, paint with a different size brush, switch up the paint - try gouache instead of acrylics or oils, change your color palette, work on different substrate, start a new series, and/or change your subject matter. Everything becomes new again.
