I saw this list in Bob Burridge’s weekly newsletter last week. I’m going to post it here, so I can easily find it when I need to buy more black paint.
•Ivory Black has a cool tone when thinned down and is transparent
•Mars Black is dense and opaque with brown undertones when thinned
•Primary Black is designed for color mixing. It is a cool tone and is great for overall cover
•Carbon Black is strong, opaque and can be overpowering
•Lamp Black is an opaque, heavy, cool blue Black. Can be used as a staining pigment
He also talked about black paint in his weekly YT video.
I’ve always used a lot of black paint in my paintings, and consider it a necessary art supply.
I’ve seen some artists on youtube saying that mixing your own black paint is better than what you buy in a tube. I usually buy primary colors, and mix paint myself, so I figured why not?
I quickly found out that mixing black takes a lot of other paint, and all I could think was, I’m using up all these colors, and I now need to replace 3 tubes, instead of buying one tube of black.
Plus I was spending extra time mixing when I could just squeeze black out of the tube and be on with it. It didn’t make sense to me.

If I have some dark colors on hand that I don’t normally use & it would otherwise harden up sitting in a drawer, sure, I’ll make black with it. I hate wasting anything, but otherwise, I’d rather let the professionals mix it for me.

I had the sudden urge to paint birds last week. I found some chipboard in my studio that I didn’t know I had, and figured why not use it up.
I’ve also been working on these little 4x4 mini portraits. I titled this series The Squares, and each of the little Squares are numbered. Unless I find more 4x4s hiding somewhere in my studio, this will be a small series. I’m going to be auctioning them off, along with other paintings on eBay over the coming week. Check it out if you’re interested.
Hope you have a creative week ahead.
My artwork is available on Daily Paintworks, and eBay.
