This is an abstract I painted back in 2011. It’s in a handmade book of abstract paintings that I made, and it’s still one of my favorite art journals today. I recently was flipping through the book again, and I decided to scan some of the pages, and offer them as prints. I’ll post more in time.

For a year or two, I went through a phase where I only painted abstracts, and I think it started with that abstract art journal. Maybe that’s why it feels special to me. I was burnt out on painting portraits, and it showed in my work. As soon as I switched to abstracts I felt free. Happy again.

Read Between The Lines

Sometimes, I want to be loose – to be free to make marks, to have fun, and not feel owned by the painting. None of that “an eye must go here, a nose there, and it has to look like the photograph” talk going on in my head. I can just be. No concerns. No worries. 

A Few Lazy Hours

Painting abstracts makes me feel wild abandonment. I can do whatever I want without rules. To be able to express oneself without restriction is the freedom I’m seeking atm. I will still paint portraits, of course, but it’s nice to take a break now and then. 

Meander – my word for the year. When I picked that word, I saw in my mind’s eye a new series of abstract and palette knife paintings. I will be focusing on this new series going into the summer. I’m excited to think of all the abstracts I’ll have created by the fall. Oooh! 

You see that robin egg grayish blue in this abstract? I mixed a whole jar full of it. I’m in love. More soon.
