I decided to go ahead and finish all 29 faces. I know I’m a couple days early, but I didn’t want to spread it out until next Wednesday, which will be well into March. Instead, I doubled up on faces for a couple days, and somehow got through it. Whew! After two months of participating in painting challenges, 59 paintings altogether, I’m very happy to be done.

These were all done with palette knives and acrylic paint. Some are available as prints.

My goals for 29 Faces are.. to be loose, paint as fast as possible, have no concern about the outcome, and to have fun. I don’t care whether the faces are good, bad or ugly. It only matters that I do the exercise every day.

I have an art journal that I want to fill up, and I thought this would be a great way of doing it. That, and it helps tremendously if I warm up before painting “for real” every day, and painting these faces is a great way to begin the day.

Sometimes, I start out painting clumsy, as if I forget how to paint overnight. These quick little portraits get me moving, and thinking like an artist again in no time. I used to do art journal pages as a daily practice, but then I stopped for almost a year. I got so busy with outside projects, and never even cracked my art journals open for months. But, now that I’m doing it again, I’m hooked.

Since I’m a working artist, I’m constantly making art for everyone else, hardly ever for myself. Painting is my full-time job. It doesn’t matter if I fall in love with a painting, I have to offer it for sale. Unfortunately, I don’t live in magicland. I have food to buy, and bills to pay every month, so I have to sell as much as I can.
I like to think I have a tough interior, that being an artist for so many years has given me thick skin. Yet, it’s not easy seeing my favorites go out the door, knowing I will never see them again in my lifetime. So, another positive to doing these is they’re originals, and they’re all MINE. I don’t have to worry about making them likeable, saleable or anything at all. They’re just for me, and I get to keep them forever. Yes!!

I am offering some of these as digital prints. You can click on the links below the photo, and it will take you to my Etsy shop. If there isn’t a link, I’m not offering it as a print.

The first 4 paintings I gave myself 20 minutes on a timer. I had plenty of time, as you can see..the paintings are more polished. The last three paintings were done in less time. I don’t know how long I took because I didn’t set the timer..I just rushed through them as fast as possible, so maybe like 5 minutes each? Not long, I know that much.
How was your week? Are you keeping up the pace of 29 Faces? Do you find the challenge difficult or does it come easy for you?

While I was thinking of ways to slow down this month, I also felt the urge to mix things up. I’ve decided to sign up for the 29 Faces challenge. This will be mixing the old with the new. The old being painting faces, since it was my subject of choice for many years. The new will be using knives only, no brushes. I want to keep it loose and fun.
To make it even more challenging, I’m going to borrow Jane Spakowsky’s 20 minute painting idea from a couple years ago. I’m setting a timer, and I get x amount of minutes per painting. I will probably vary the amount of time I give myself each day, but no more than 20 minutes. Some days I might only get 5 minutes, depending on how much time I have to spare. When I hear the alarm, I’m putting the knife down, and I’m done. I won’t be fussing or fretting over how it looks like I usually do when painting faces. It will be what it is, and that’s that.
I’m not going to blog every day, but I will post every painting, good, bad or ugly each Wednesday. If I still like doing it at the end of the month, I might make it a weekly thing. We’ll see.
February should be an interesting month. Hope you stick around. Let me know if you’re doing 29 faces in the comments, so I can visit your blogs.
