I lost 12 pounds the hard way

I haven’t left the house in days. This photo is to remind me there is a world out there. The lake is just up the street, really it is. I’ve been sick as a dog for 2 weeks..the flu. I fought it for days, and then finally gave in. I only meant to go downstairs to take a nap, but I slept for 6 days straight. I could not get up. For someone who never sleeps more than 4 or 5 hours a night, it was heavenly..except for the part about being sick. ugh. I lost 12 pounds. I lost my voice. I coughed a lot. I completely missed Christmas. :/

I am back at work now, but I’m taking it easy. I’m not fully well yet, so I’m not going to push myself. I still plan on doing the 30 paintings in 30 days, and blogging every day in January. For the first few days, I’m going to post the paintings I finished just before getting sick. You haven’t seen them yet, so it will be new stuff, and it will give me time to get back into the swing of things behind the scenes. Leslie says it’s fine to paint ahead, so it’s not like I’ll be cheating. lol

THIS blew me AWAY

A huge box of goodness came in the mail from my friend, Wanda. She loaded it up with fun things for me to use in my art..my imagination is running wild. 🙂

And, this..THIS blew me AWAY. sigh OMGOSH..

I was so shocked when I saw it.
I mean, just a few weeks ago she posted it on her blog,
and now it’s here, in my house..
in my hands, and I’m looking for the best place
to hang it. !!!

and the big mess gone from down there.
Now we can actually live down there,
and work ONLY up here.
It used to be normal to cook dinner, fold laundry,
and work at the same time.
I NEVER got any rest.
Now, work and living space are separated.
Soooo much easier.

I’m gearing up to do a painting a day in January. Leslie Saeta is having another 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. I haven’t thought of a theme yet..what should I do??? Something different. Something challenging, yet something I can paint 30 times, and not get stuck or bored.

In September, I did the challenge, and my theme was photo booth paintings. You can see the entire month of paintings here. I found old photo booth pics online to use for reference photos. It was fun, but I want to do something different this time, I think..I’m thinking abstract. Maybe narrow it down. Abstract kitties or something? No, not kitties. lol Not abstract, either..I’m thinking out loud here. How about 30 days of art journaling? hm..I don’t know.

In January, I’ll be taking Misty’s class, also. I just signed up. YES!!! It will be a busy month, and I’ll be blogging every day again. sigh. Not looking forward to the blogging part, but okay. lol I’m going to do it differently than in September..not nearly as many photos as I posted before. One photo, and maybe a few words, and that’s it. It’s really too much work, otherwise.

This was my work desk a couple days ago.

The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. You feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.~ Chuck Close

I’ve fallen in love with her work. I’m reading back through some of her archives, and I love how she’s so determined to do art that she’s doing it on her dining room table..even before they’re fully moved into their new place. That is a true artist, and I admire her greatly. I once had a tiny studio in my walk-in closet, so I know what it’s like to love your work so much you’re willing to work anywhere.

My Etsy shop is soooo busy right now. I just finished wrapping up a $700 order to ship out. It was really nerve wracking, and I’m glad it’s done. I’m still a little shaky. lol That’s the biggest order I’ve ever gotten. Whew!! Oh, yeah..I’m running another special, FREE shipping on all prints for a limited time only. It will run through the weekend. If you’ve wanted to buy one of my prints now is a good time. I also have tons of new paintings being listed every day, like these 4x4s for only $35.00 each..some have already sold, but there a still a few left.

I’m a little obsessed with Miranda

That is my problem with life, I just rush through it, like I’m being chased. Even things whose whole point is slowness, like drinking relaxing tea. When I drink relaxing tea I suck it down like I’m in a contest for who can drink relaxing tea the quickest. ~Miranda July

🙂 I’m a little obsessed with Miranda right now. Do you do that? Do you get obsessed with people? Do you Google them, and watch their films, read their books or follow their blogs with a great passion? Do you daydream about hanging out with them in person, maybe be their very best friend and confidant? I do that, A LOT. I would suck down relaxing tea with Miranda any day! It gets lonely in my studio, all alone. But, I always seem late to the party. Sometimes really late, and sometimes just a hair too late. Sigh. I’m not going to give up, tho. I just need to pay attention.

If you’re looking for a replacement to Google reader, which was discontinued back in the summer, check out Feedspot. I have tried bloglovin, and feedly, Old Reader, and and..the list is endless, really. There was always something that I didn’t quite like about them..the layout, the colors, or well, something. I like Feedspot!! Finally!! Laaaaa!! It’s clean, and easy..it’s got a white background, and it’s much like Google Reader used to be. I just want a simple place to read my blogs, and I finally found it. Now I can catch up with all I’ve missed since July. ps: I saw something about if you buy premium or gold membership you won’t see ads. I don’t see ads because I use Adblock Plus. 😉 hint hint shh!

I didn’t mean for her to look like Frida, but I think she looks like her anyway. I’m kinda digging this blogging three days a week instead of every day routine. It gives me time to plan out my posts, get some links ready, sit around and think (yes, I enjoy doing that), watch Netflix, and it’s a lot less stressful. It also gives me more time to visit YOUR blogs, instead of worrying about getting a blog post started for tomorrow, and I reallllly reallllly like that. Whew.

I’ve spent a lot of time in the studio this week. It’s like I’m trying to catch up from not being able to paint much over the holiday, and now it’s hard to make myself stop painting. Full steam ahead!

When I’m painting, it really helps to have something on in the background to give me something to think about while I’m working. Sometimes, it’s music. I LOVE music, especially non-stop, commercial free music on 8 tracks. But, I’m also always on the lookout for long youtube videos..something I don’t have to attend to while my hands are covered in paint, and as luck would have it, I found these two guys, Jason Horejs, and Barney Davey. I’ve been listening to them non-stop ever since. They have regular Google hangouts, and discuss topics that are of interest to artists. In this video they discuss blogging, and I was kinda surprised to find out I’ve been doing it all wrong.

I was under the impression that I should be blogging every day, or nearly every day, anyway. I even feel a little guilty if I don’t get a chance to blog. Well, no more!! These guys say it’s best to blog once a week. Once a week? Whut? That sure would save me a lot of time each day. Maybe I should consider it? hm..

What do you think? How often do you blog? Is once a week enough to say all you’ve got to say? For me, I don’t think it is because I’m a daily painter. I consistently have work to show, usually a huge backlog of work. However, I’m thinking I wouldn’t mind shrinking my blogging down to say Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. My posts will be lengthier, more substantial, but it will take a load off my shoulders at the same time. It’s certainly something to give some thought to, and anything that would ease up my work load, I’m all for it. 🙂 I think I’m going to give it a try.

Thanksgiving dinner last night was sooo fun! One of our guests was 2 years old, and what a little treasure he is. So much fun, and full of life! Greg and I were both exhausted after they left. We just sat on the couch, and didn’t move. Finally, he looked at me and said, “I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have little kids around. I’m tiiiiiired.” lol I think it’s okay to say everyone had a great time. 🙂 It was fun to dress up and put makeup on, too. I usually look like a raggamuffin..all covered in paint, wearing sweatpants all day, hair up in a bun. It felt human to wear a skirt, and let my long hair down. I hope we can do this again real soon, and not wait for a holiday to get together.

Oh, my precious Sweet Pea. She might be blind, but she sure doesn’t miss a thing. I dropped a tube of paint the other day. I went to pick it up about 5 or 10 mins later, and she had flipped around in her bed, and was using it as a pillow. She was so cute, I had to take her picture. Oh, yes.

Happy December everyone! I can’t believe it’s already the last month of the year. I need to tally up the paintings I did for November, and make a collage.

Her head was too small for her body, so I’m blocking it out with gesso. I’ve had a lot of paintings go wrong lately, but it’s okay. I take it all in stride, and it doesn’t bother me at all anymore. A couple years ago, I’d get so nervous if I went through a blah spell. I’d wonder if I’d ever get back on track..was I really an artist? Would I ever paint a painting I like again? What if my muse never returns, and I stop painting forever?? Now, I just laugh at my old fears and worries. Of course, I will get back on track, and paint something I like…sometime.

In the meantime, I’m not going to worry about it. I’ll just keep messing around in my studio until something good happens. And, when the not so good happens, it’s okay. It gives me something to post about on my blog, right? So, why should I care? My attitude reminds me of this painting I revised a couple months ago titled Zero.

It was snowing earlier today, and I was sooo excited. Now, it’s pouring rain, which is great, too. I love a good stormy day, doesn’t matter if it’s rain or snow. Sunny days are so boring to me. I know..I’m weird, but I’ve been this way since I was little. I get excited every time the weather turns dark..(not tornado dark, of course. That’s too scary) I loved wearing my raincoat and boots. Still do!!

She’s on her way to her new home in Maine. 🙂 Some paintings are hard to let go, knowing I’ll never see them again. This is one of them. I painted her after my cat Emma died on Mother’s Day. This painting will always remind me of Emma. At least I’ll always have the photo, tho, right?
