I got several larger paintings finished last week in a whirlwind painting spree. I seem to be going through spells of not painting for a week or two, and then painting non-stop for hours/days on end like a maniac.

I’ll be posting new work in my shop this week. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming…

It can be hung on a thumbtack or nail.
Comes with a built in hanger of sorts.

I need more photographs before I list them. If you’re interested in any of these, please check back later this week or contact me for more info.

You probably can’t tell from these photos, but most of these are larger pieces. Nothing crazy, but I think some might be around 14 inches x 10ish. I need to measure each one.

Since they’re larger, I’m not going to include these in my Rescued Series, even though they’re painted on recycled cardboard. They’ll be titled, not numbered. My entire Rescued Series on cardboard is available at Daily Paintworks.

How I Started A Consistent Art Habit – Great advice if you’re struggling with resistance to creating art. All it takes is one line, and you’re off.

ai “artist” has meltdown over theft – lots of F bombs were dropped in this video, so if you have sensitive ears, this video isn’t for you.

I totally get his frustration at the irony on display. It’s completely, and utterly okay that AI “artists” are stealing from real artists who are actually putting in hours and years of work, but it’s not okay to steal from those making AI art. Gotcha! Theft is wrong, but make this make sense, please. The audaciousness of AI bros never ceases to amaze me in the most negative ways.

I also found Katokid, an artist from Germany, and I binged a few of his videos. He’s pretty funny, and I share his point of view on many art topics.

Science took over without interference from me

After I wrote about my aversion to creating abstract paintings, I went into my studio and proceeded to make a liar out of myself by creating these art journal pages without any trouble at all.

I didn’t have anything in mind to use as a jumping off place, such as a quote, poem, memory, or scenery. I just wanted to play around with paint, and see what happened.

I had a large bottle of bright pink paint sitting on my table, and I went a little mad splashing it on the paper. I did the same with other colors. Science took over without interference from me. I didn’t try to control what was happening or not happening, and the paint & water did what it does best.

Instead of struggling, I found myself playing like a child, much like I do when I’m painting portraits. It wasn’t until I was finished that I stepped back to look at what I had done, and thought, hm, I love what’s happening here. I’m playing, splashing, making blobs, and there hasn’t been a negative ugly thought in my head the entire time.

I took my journal out into the hot sun to dry, and now I’m thinking next time maybe I should paint outside instead. Ooooh, how messy & fun that could get!!

Commissions are closed

As I said in my last post, I’ve been going through an experimental phase for the past several months. I’m all about stepping outside my comfort zone, and trying new things lately.

Because I’m in this time of transition with my artwork, I’m no longer accepting orders for custom paintings or drawings. I’ve been privately turning down requests for a couple months now, but I thought I should make it official. I’ve taken down the custom painting page from my site, and turned off the “request a custom order” button on Etsy.

I might open commissions back up again in the future, but for now I want to give myself time to learn, discover & listen to my own voice within. I hope you understand. xo

How I create intuitively and make portraits out of marks on a page

I touched on how I create intuitively a bit ago, but I thought I’d actually take photos of my art journal pages before I turned them into portrait paintings. This is what the page looked like before I created the portrait below.

I start out by prepping my art journal pages ahead of time. I explained how I do it in the link above. Later when I’m ready to create in my journal, I’ll look for little hints on the page that will be the start of a portrait. I don’t know about you, but I definitely see eyes, an outline of a face, and a mouth on this page, so I turned the above background into this portrait…

I actually saw a couple different faces in this background, but decided to go with only one.

When the background is mostly black, it makes it a little difficult, but I saw those jagged edges on the bottom left as hair.

From the moment I held the box of colors in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves.

I saw an eye on this page, and a bit of what looked like a nose. So, I went with it, and this is what I created…

This is a fun way to fill my art journal, and force myself to be more creative by making something out of nothing. It gets my imagination fired up, and once I start, it’s hard to stop. It’s quite addictive.

Full, plump & bloated

My art journal is full,

These pages – my only record
of summer days zooming past
now long gone.
I have so much to show for it
and
nothing at all.

Now that this art journal is finished, I’m trying to figure out where to go from here. I’m undecided. I have some other art journals that I need to finish, so perhaps that’s what I’ll focus on next.
