I painted my background board that I use in my little photo studio. I’ve had the board for years, and used to paint on it, which explains all the paint marks it used to have. I thought it might be distracting, tho, and take away from the paintings. So now one side is white, and the other black. I can easily flip it over if I think a painting would look best against the opposite value. I quickly realized that shooting against black is difficult though because there’s a lot of glare from my lights on either side of the painting. I need to figure out a better way.
White on the other hand..it might take me a minute to get used to editing the photos. The white background comes out looking quite dull and gray in the photos. I have to spend more time in Photoshop than I did before. I’ve tried adjust my lights, using reflectors, and diffusers to calm down the shadows. Nothing seems to work all that well. I’ll keep playing with it until I get better a system figured out.
Edited: I figured it out with the help of this website! My photos look much better now. I’ll be reshooting a lot of my paintings over the next few days.
This painting is a 6×6 on canvas panel. It was painted with palette knives. It’s available for purchase here.
