Abstract painting

It has taken me years to finally finish this abstract painting. There are layers and layers beneath the surface. I’m finally ready to let it go, and call it done.
You can’t buy happiness,
but you can buy ice cream
and that’s kind of the same thing.

It feels amazing to be painting large once again. I have been painting mostly miniatures and small paintings now for 3 years. To go from that small to this large felt intimidating to me, but I stuck with it. I want to get comfortable painting larger, so I’m happy I am taking the summer to experiment with abstract painting.
If my vision was better…if I wasn’t blind in my left eye..if I had depth perception, and no astigmatism causing poor vision in my right eye, I would paint large portraits, also. That’s a whole lot of ifs. As it is, I don’t feel confident in getting the proportions right.
When I was a kid, I used to think,
‘Man, if I could ever afford all the ice cream I want to eat,
that’s as rich as I ever want to be.

I guess I could try using an app to help me trace a face on the canvas, but Idk? I’d rather sketch it myself, but I know how badly I suck at it. When I paint small, I can wear my glasses, and use a magnifying glass. When I’m painting large, I need to see the big picture, and it’s difficult to do. Because I’m near and farsighted in my right eye, I have to stand away from the canvas on order to see it clearly, and then I can’t reach it to draw or paint. I’m not even sure if I can see well enough to use a tracing app, but I might give it a try sometime.
Until then, I’ve been thinking about creating some new abstract portraits with palette knives, which will be super fun. Probably won’t be as large as this painting, but we’ll see.
Hope you had a lovely 4th of July weekend. xo
