Katie Jeanne Wood - before and after revised floral painting

I feel like I’ve been living inside my blog, and being a babble head lately, so this is going to be more image heavy, less writing. This is another painting that I revised last weekend. It’s actually been revised twice now. Last time, I put it back online knowing I didn’t like it. Stupid, I know..because this is the 3rd time I’ve photographed it, and had to edit the photos. Not the best use of my time, I know, but what else did I have to do at 5:03 this morning? ha! Yeah, I was up, and snapping photos that early. I kept thinking, if only I had done it right the first time..

But, I understand what happened here, and why it took so long to come to this version of the painting. I loved the original background, and was reluctant to cover it up. However, I think the new vase was necessary, and fits better in the space. The buttery yellow on the sides of the painting is something I did when I first painted it, so I left it in. I really like that shade of yellow, so it will probably show up in more of my paintings this year. Here are more photos of it..

The price isn’t increasing because I’ve done more work to it. I don’t think it’s fair to charge for my mistakes, so the price remains the same as it did before. The important thing is..I LIKE IT!! It’s finally finished, and every time I see a photo of it, I won’t cringe. The best part, I won’t be revising it again. Whew! I would definitely hang this one on my wall, and that’s my goal.

Yesterday I wrote about my New Year’s resolution, about how I’m making changes to the way I paint. This year, I’m going to concentrate on quality over quantity, and slow my pace down a bit. I’m only going to offer paintings for sale that I actually like. No more listing crappy paintings just for the sake of listing something. Because of all that, there is one more change coming this year, and that’s my color palette. Remember when I said if it was up to me I’d only paint pink paintings, well..I’ve been putting a lot of thought into that statement, and it really is alllll up to me, isn’t it? (like, duh..it is my business I’m talking about! ;)) KISS.

I admit it. I’m a full blown people pleaser. I will do whatever I can to make someone happy. Unfortunately, it’s been hurting my business. I’ve been using every color in the rainbow in my paintings to try and please everyone on the planet, when I’d really rather use more pink. Bottom line is, by trying to please everyone, I’m not pleasing myself, and because of that, my focus isn’t where it should be..on what works best for me, and my business. KISS.

So, I’m starting the new year using a very limited color palette, as you see in the photo above. This is one of the paintings I revised over the weekend. I used only pinks, a new blue that I just mixed up (I mix most colors myself), and whites. Ahhh, this feels sooo much better..colors I can actually live with, and hang on my own wall. Because at the end of the day, if paintings don’t sell, I’ve got to hang them somewhere until they do, right? Might as well paint with colors I like. KISS.

By writing these blog posts the past couple days, I think I found my word for the year because no matter what I’m doing, whether it will be sitting in court serving jury duty for the first half of the year or painting my little heart out, KISS comes in handy for an over-thinker like me.

In case you don’t know, KISS stands for keep it simple, stupid. I need the reminder every now and then. 😉

My work related New Year’s resolution is quite simple – no more offering paintings for sale that I dislike. This is a big one because I do it all the time. I got into this habit because the nature of Etsy is to list, list, list all day and night..seven days a week. I’ve noticed that big shops list constantly, every hour, around the clock. The only way for me to list every day is to have a slew of paintings and prints for sale. Easy, right? I created A LOT of paintings. I have over 1000 listings in my Etsy shop right now, if you include the expired listings, and my drafts. I did all this in a little over a year. That’s all well and good, but here’s the thing..in order to create that much, I’ve been rushing through paintings. My main goal being – get them listed NOW. Full speed ahead, goooooo! Who cares if I like it or not. Heck, I’ve listed paintings that I positively knew I would end up taking down to revise, but I was fine with it at the time. I’ll deal with it later, is what I’d think. Now, I’m to the point of revising a bunch of paintings every couple months because I keep listing paintings that I don’t like. It’s a real slippery slope. 

As I was worked on revising several larger paintings Saturday, I got to thinking about how stupid, and pointless it is to work this way. If I slow down, and actually create something I like the first time around, I wouldn’t have all this extra work to do. It costs me a lot of time in the long run. I not only have to revise the paintings, but I have to reshoot all the photos for the listing once the painting is finished. If I only list paintings I like, it would remove this whole need to revise. I thought, damn girl, you’re working waaay too hard. It has to stop. So, 2016 is for slowing down, and working at my pace, not Etsy’s pace. You read it here first. haha I hope I remember this when I get out of jury duty at the end of June. ha! We’ll see. 

There is one more change coming, which I’ll fill you in on tomorrow.

Larger paintings aren’t easy to photograph. I’ve reshot this painting at least 3 times now, and I’m still not 100% pleased with the results. I can’t seem to get it right. The camera isn’t picking up the layers or thickness of paint on the flowers. It never does. My paintings always look better in person, but I’m not going to let it stop me. I’m posting it anyway, and I hope you forgive my camera, and editing skills.

🙂 I think it depends on the type of year you’ve had. It’s been a good year for me, so I’ll be seeing the new year in this year. 

Last day of 2015. Woo..can you believe it? I have a lot to get done. It’s time to wrap everything up, and organize my painting folders for next year. I don’t know how you save your photos on your computer, but I figured I’d show you the way I do it. First, I make a folder for 2016, and inside of that folder I make other folders for the categories, such as Floral, Landscape, Abstract, Birds, and Still Life. Inside of each of those folders are more folders for all the different sizes. I’m including a screenshot of my folders, so you get an idea of what I’m talking about. I have separate folders for my Miz Katie work, just to keep everything neat and organized. I’m pretty good at remembering what size a painting is, and sometimes, even the year I painted it, so locating the image when I need to isn’t too hard. This is what it looks like..I left the image large, so you can click to get a better view.

So, exciting, eh?. That’s what I’ll be working on today, and of course, taxes after the 1st. Ugh. I always figure, the faster I get it done, the less I have to worry and stress over it. That’s what’s up for today..wrapping up all the loose ends, and getting into the kitchen to make GF vegetarian lasagna for dinner. mmm..can’t wait for tonight!!

Feeling much better today. I think it helped to workout even though I was sick..I realllly wasn’t feeling up for it, but I forced myself to get on the treadmill, and I was able to sweat the sickies out of my system. Now I can get on with my life. Whew.

I’ve been feeling like I’m coming down with something for a week, but it never got to be full blown I’mdownforthecount type of thing. I’d actually forget I woke up sick as the day progressed, but today is the worst so far..I’ve been up for a few hours, and it doesn’t seem to be going away. I’m achy, sneezing, coughing, and stuffy headed. My throat is scratchy, and my voice is unrecognizable. The poor cats run from me when I speak to them. haha I’m crossing my fingers that it’s not the flu because my stomach is a bit upset, too. :/ Time to drink lots of Airborne, and tea, and get better.

It poured buckets yesterday, turning the street into two fast flowing rivers. Then it got cold, so it all froze into an icy mess. The wind started howling, and shaking the house. Freezing rain was pounding my studio window, and then it started to snow. Today and tomorrow will be more of the same. 6 to 8 inches will be the end result, the news tells me. Crossing fingers that the power stays on to light up my big screen because recliner, blanket, three kitties on my lap, and Netflix sounds like the perfect way to spend a day like today. Stay safe if you’re going out in this today.
