This one is from last week. I was still being tight and careful with the palette knives, I can tell. After painting portraits for a long while, it’s hard for me to let go, and paint loosely. I almost have to practice making a mess, but I do start to let my hair down after a few days. Here’s a peek at what I did last night..

The heat has left once again. Crazy yoyo weather has got me thinking of doing some plein air painting. Better be quick before it comes back. I don’t think I’ll be good at it, but it will be fun to try. How hard can it be to paint flat ground? ::snort::

Day 10 of 30/30

I worked on some abstract landscapes last night using oils. Now I’m thinking my theme should have been landscapes, flowers and birds. It’s not too late to change my mind, is it? Too late! I already did. 🙂 It will be a few days before I’m ready to post them on my blog, tho. Not quite finished yet.

Until I started painting this flower series a couple weeks ago, I had an awful time painting shadows. I’m not good at shadows on faces for some reason, always came out looking like dark blobs to me. I started working on improving my skills, and now it’s my favorite thing to paint. The shadow, the shadow within the shadow, and the glass are all fun…and the background. Oh, heck..I love painting everything in this flower series. I don’t want to stop, ever.

It got cool, but now it’s hot again. Soon to be cool again after tomorrow, so it’s all good. I’m tired, if you can’t tell. It’s late, and it’s bedtime. Night, night. zzz

I probably should know better than to do a overhaul on my website in the middle of 30 paintings in 30 days. I’ve wanted to change things around here for a long while though, and I finally found the right theme to use. I’m sure by the time you’re reading this that I’ve had plenty of time to get everything set up, and looking spiffy. Right? haha I’m so funny. Okay, probably things are in chaos behind the scenes, so please bear with me. How does the front page look to you? It looks fine to me on my iPad, and wide screen monitor. Looks kinda poopy in my old square monitor, but it’s okay. I doubt many people still use the old monitors anymore, right?

Wanting: a studio helper who will do all the online work for me, including blogging, so I can take more naps. haha I’m such a dreamer.
Loving: the thought of fall coming soon. I’ve been noticing how the light has changed in the past couple weeks. Nightfall is tucking us all in an hour earlier these days. I couldn’t be happier.

How I take photos of my paintings – White Roses, Day 4 of 30 paintings in 30 days

A couple people have emailed recently, and asked me how I take photos of my paintings. I set up a photography table in my office with new clip on flex lights a couple months ago. I have one clipped on to the left side of the table, and one on the right. Painting in the center. Doesn’t get any easier. It allows me to take pretty consistent photos, and I can photograph at any hour of the day or night. It comes in pretty handy if you’re a night owl like me. I do my best work at 2am most of the time.

I’m using natural or bright white light bulbs. I don’t have the package in front of me at the moment, so I’m going off memory. You can buy them at the grocery store, tho. I bought these photo bulbs when I ordered the flex lights, but I don’t care for them, and don’t recommend them. One thing, the bulbs are yellowing, so I had to color correct all my photos in Photoshop. And, the bulbs are extremely HOT. You can’t turn these babies on, and leave them to even make a quick bathroom run. I melted some styrofoam by leaving one on for just a few seconds, and that’s when I knew they had to go. Grocery store bulbs are much safer, cheaper, and are non-yellowing.

Daisy in a water glass, Day 3 of 30 paintings in 30 days

I was listening to indie folk music while painting tonight, and sipping chamomile tea with honey. I popped an Apples and Cinnamon plugin into the outlet, and before I knew it, all was right in my little world. If Fall isn’t ready to come to me just yet, then I shall go to it. The heat index was 100F once again today.

Two nights in a row, there’s been a fly buzzing around my office while I’m trying to write a blog post. Tonight it landed on my teacup, probably feasting on a speck of honey that drizzled down the side. I have swatted, and hit it at least 3 times, and it gets up and flies away, only to be back a few minutes later. I’m a bit frustrated, but as long as it’s not flying into a wet impasto painting, we’ll be all set.
