I have written about my love/hate for canvas & canvas boards many times – I normally prep the surface because I don’t like working directly on canvas.
I use a palette knife to spread the modeling or molding paste as evenly as possible over the panels. Then I wait until they’re dry, and wet sand them. Some might need two coats of paste, if I don’t get it thick enough the first time around or if I sand down to the canvas in a spot.
After the panels are dry from wet sanding, I gesso over the top of the modeling paste two or three times to seal it. Otherwise, the modeling paste might lift off on my brush, if I’m using a lot of water on the painting.
If you don’t have either modeling or molding paste on hand, you can also use collage paper to prep & cover up the canvas surface. It won’t make the surface smooth, but it will give your painting interesting texture and layers. And, hey, at least you won’t be painting directly on canvas, right?
