My husband and I took a mini vacation last year in the Boston Mountains. When we weren’t hiking, we spent a lot of time staring at the gorgeous view of the mountains off in the distance. We had a back deck at our cabin, and we literally couldn’t take our eyes off the view. I remember rushing outside before I even had my morning coffee, just so I could take it all in. We spent most of our time out there on the deck, even after the sun went down. When I got home, I painted this painting from memory, without using a reference photo. All I could remember was the sun was setting, and it lit the top of the mountain up so pretty. 

Out of curiosity, and to refresh my memory, I looked through my photo folders this morning, and found the sunset photos I had taken. Of course, my painting looks nothing like the photo. I didn’t expect it to because that wasn’t my goal. I just wanted to capture the red over the mountains that was etched in my memory.

This is what the view looked like in the daytime, and where the blue sky came from in my painting, I think. I was having a mixture of two different memories at the same time, perhaps?

If you ever get a chance to visit The Ozarks, you won’t be disappointed. It is a lovely place, and I hope to explore it again soon.
