Lots of good stuff in this painting – acrylic paint, collage paper on a flat panel painted with acrylic paint & palette knives. It’s now available in my shop.
Watching: I’ve been enjoying watching this artist, this artist, and this artist paint portraits with gouache. I’m still trying to get the hang of it myself. Whenever I use gouache I’ll think, I love this so much, I’ll never use another medium again. Then something happens in my brain, and when it comes time to choose a medium again I think no no no..I don’t want to paint with gouache, and I go back to acrylics and oils.
I think it’s the impermanence factor that scares me away. I usually like to add many layers, and I’m still trying to figure out if I can without washing away the bottom layers or have the colors turn to mud. I’m thinking not. I also prefer to seal my paintings with varnish when I’m done, and again that’s not what you do with gouache. Anytime I don’t want to smear paint or I’m working with say chalk markers, I seal my paintings with Dorland’s Wax. I need to try it out with gouache to see if I like it. I think it would be better than no seal at all, in case something gets spilled on the work. I would hate for it to completely wash away.
I definitely need to work more with gouache on practice pieces or in my art journal to learn more about it. This week, I will make time to do that. I’ll let you know what I come up with for solutions.
