Abstract painting

This was an old abstract painting I created roughly 6 or 8 years ago. It’s been hanging out in a box in my closet for a while now. I decided a few weeks ago to do something with these paintings, so I’m going to revise them.
I love how the collage paper shows through.
Since I’ve been focusing on mostly abstract painting for about a year and a half now, I feel more confident about tackling the huge job of revising all those old paintings. So far, I’ve really enjoyed it, and absolutely LOVE the outcome.
I titled this one Sliding Toward Twilight. In my mind, I have made up several stories about this painting, and it changes slightly every time I look at it. If you purchase this painting, I hope you’ll see it through your imagination, like I do. The painting can be whatever you’d like it to be. Don’t be afraid to make it your own.
Before
This painting has gone through many changes, revisions, and titles. Up to now, I haven’t been able to make up my mind whether it’s finished or not. This is what the painting looked like yesterday. It was okay, but I thought the background clashed too much with her skin tones. I noticed the listing was ready to expire, so I decided to revise it for the final time. This included a new title as well.

I had just mixed this blue paint for other paintings, and so I figured why not give it a shot and see? I absolutely love how it turned out. This small change has made the portrait look so different.

This week I worked on cleaning up my Etsy shop to make it easier to navigate. I used to have all my prints together in one category, which made finding a specific one difficult. Between the active and expired listings, I have 300 or 400 prints, so I had to scroll a lot. I thought, if I’m scrolling this much, so are others visiting my shop.
I separated all the prints into categories – abstract prints, animal prints, floral prints, and portrait prints. It’s soooo much easier now to find what you’re looking for.
I also decided to change the bird paintings category to “Animals”. I should have done this long ago because I paint cats, bears, dogs, cows, and at least two white horses so far. I want to add to this animal series, maybe this coming winter? You can find all my animal paintings in one spot now, along with prints here.
I wish we could make subcategories to drill down more, but Etsy’s limited. We’re only allowed 20 categories, period. I had to delete several of my old categories to fit all the prints in there. We’re not allowed subcategories, which would make life so much easier. Ah, well. Maybe some day? Etsy, you listening? We really could use this upgrade. Etsy follows me on Twitter, maybe I’ll tweet them.
Today, I’m working on adding a brand new category to my Etsy shop, which is exciting. I’ll tell you more about it soon, if all goes well. 🙂

I hope you have a lovely weekend. If you need me, I’ll be in the studio trying to stay cool. It’s miserably hot & humid here. My ac has been running non-stop around the clock. The air outside is thick like soup. I worry about the homeless, and people who don’t have working air..it’s brutal out there. Please stay safe. xo

Last week I wrote about revising this painting titled Looking West. I basically wanted to leave most of the painting as it was, but spiff it up in places.
The background was a dark gray, and while I liked it at the time, I’m going through a more bolder, brighter color stage right now. This red orange is from Golden..I can’t remember the exact name of the color, but it really makes the piece pop, imo. I also changed her shirt color to a yellow green that I mixed a couple weeks ago.
Her forehead looked a bit high, so I brought her hair down over her face to cover it up. I also fixed the collar of her shirt. I’m not sure why I left it so crooked. Maybe I didn’t notice at the time?
This is a mixed media collage painting, which means there are several layers under there. I don’t like painting directly on canvas or canvas panels, so I usually start out by laying down collage papers to create layers or molding paste if I want the surface to be smooth.
All in all, I’m happy with the outcome of this painting. Yes, it’s weird. I like to position my characters at different angles to make my paintings unique, and different. Otherwise..b o r i n g.
The painting is available here.

What I’m watching: Dina – this is a sweet documentary about love and marriage between an autistic man and a woman with Asperger’s syndrome.
What I’m reading: Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi
Covid numbers are surging in my county, up over 17% in a week..seems like I write the same thing every few days. Up, uP, UP. I sound like a broken record. My local news claims this is one of the worst counties in the US. I don’t know if that’s true or if all local news is saying the same thing because the numbers are bad everywhere.
Between covid and the election, I’m in desperate need of a distraction. I wanted something I could really sink my teeth into, so I picked one of my favorite books on my shelf to re-read. It’s a 1000+ page series of 4 books, so it will keep me busy for a while.
Happy Birthday Girl portrait
Big pink bow with polka dots

It’s true, she is probably too old to be wearing a big pink bow with polka dots on her birthday, but who’s gonna stop her? It is her birthday after all. 😉
I revised this painting slightly over the weekend, so I wanted to post it again. I didn’t do too much, but I lightened up around her mouth and chin a little.
This was an old floral painting I painted about 6 years ago, and although I liked it, I thought it could use a refresh. So, I revised it.
At first, I was just going to add paint over the original flowers, and spruce it up a bit, but pretty soon it took on a life of its own..
I wish I had taken more photos in between these two stages, but I was using my phone at the time to record the entire painting process. When/if I find time to edit it, I’ll put it up on my completely neglected YT channel.
