I started to do morning warm up pages again a few weeks ago. This is something I used to practice religiously every day, but for some reason I got out of the habit. These are imperfectly perfect pieces of art that I do in my journals or on scrap pieces of paper..whatever suits me that given day.

This isn’t a page that I want to post because everything about it screams this isn’t me or representative of my work. The colors, the shapes I drew..nothing about this page feels like it’s mine or something I’d do. It’s nearly cringe worthy to me, and that’s okay. I’m willing to sit and wallow in the uncomfortableness of it all.
This page will more than likely be painted over at some point. I think of it as having the first layer done, now what should I do with it? I will continue to paint until I like it.
The point of this early morning exercise isn’t to make art that’s fabulous. The point is to get the paint, brushes, knives, body, and mind activated, and moving each day. I do this within a few minutes of waking up, just after I’ve let the dog out, and brewed my coffee.

I don’t allow myself to look at my phone, computer, or do anything until I get at least one page finished. I don’t want the outside world to interfere with my first painting of the day.
There is no time limit on this exercise..some days I only spend 3 to 5 mins because I need to rush on to other things, and other days it might take me an hour or two to get warmed up. It depends on the day. I don’t watch the clock while I’m painting..that would take all the fun out of it.
If you’d like to follow along with my daily morning warm up pages, I’ve started to post some of them on Instagram.
PS: my blog posts might be a bit sparse for the next week or two while I focus on some work I have to get done.
