Large art journal abstract painting No 1
A couple weeks ago I started creating abstract paintings again. It’s been months since I’ve painted or even spent time in my studio. I’m feeling sooo rusty that even holding my palette knives and brushes in my hands feel awkward. So, I decided the first step should be working on tapping into the abstract thinking side of my brain. I’m going to write more about this process in future blog posts.
So far it’s been challenging. I’ve been creating portraits, and the little cartoon characters who live in my head for months on end. To suddenly tell them to scram so I can create something different isn’t coming easy. They’re protesting loudly in there..hey hey, where are you going??? Don’t abandon us!! We have stories to tell!!! Let us out from behind these bars, we don’t want to live in your head. lol
Don’t worry. They’re overreacting. I’m not abandoning my nightly drawing ritual. I love drawing too much to stop. But, I found this large unused art journal, and thought it would be perfect for a winter project. I want to fill it up over the next several months with new abstract paintings.
This is abstract No 1 – page one. To me this piece represents the abrupt divide between light and dark, day and night – brought on by having to move the clocks back an hour. I like it so far, but seeing these photos, I think the right side needs a black glaze over it to darken it more.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you have a lovely creative day.
